Greek Giant
Tonight’s game: Rockies( ) Vs Giants (27-51) at Willie Mays Field, 7:00 PM
German Marquez (5-3, 3.92) Vs Jeff Samardzija (2-9, 4.74)
The headline says it all.
Five Questions
- When will the winning start?
- Should Bochy have removed Ryder Jones in a double switch in his second game?
- Will Smarge’s ERA ever get below 4?
- How many dingers will BB9 end up with in 2017?
- Is this going to be Buster’s best offensive season ever?
1. start of the winning: well, 12 losses in 13 games surely is enough pain and suffering already?
2. yes, removing Jones made sense. The Giants probably think Gillaspie has as much claim on 3B as Jones, so it was good to get him in. And Jones will benefit from a day off today, too, if they do that, while he works on things with coaches and talks to the other guys.
3. (partly for #1). Samardzija starting fills me with more hope than anyone else, so lets have him go without any homers, lower that ERA, and kick off this winning streak (even 2 games would feel like a ‘streak’, no?)
4. 24 HR for Belt. Mostly because I like the #24 with respect to the Giants).
5. Buster has very steadily hit 0.350 this season, so I can imagine a batting title. So it depends how you count, as the 2B and HR are in smaller quantities. It is a shame that Buster is often the only recognized batsman in the lineup this year.
Zero protection in the lineup for Buster which makes his numbers thus far even more remarkable
Bases loaded this year has yet to get a hit, nowhere to put him, with RISP he is hitting ,241, 2 outs with RISP he is hitting .182, with the bases loaded hitting .000 .
Was it over when German Marquez bombed McCovey Harbor?
#4: 26 +/- 2
#5: Posey had a 164 wRC+ in 2012, the mvp season. He also had had real measurable production with 24 hrs and over 100 rbis. So far this year he is at 156 wrc+ without those tangible measures of production.
1. No one knows
2. Absolutely. There’s no question. Not sure why it’s even debated given the game situation
3. Jeff isn’t a problem
4. A career high
5. Not close. Unless you mean “batting average”, then maybe.
#1 in 2020 #2 No, Jones is the future so do not want him to lose his confidence #3 No #4 25 #5 No .
2020? What if I am dead before that happens???
They will win some games, but will not have a winning record for a season, until 2020, this team has lots of holes , no easy fixes .
Aah, I see. I took the question to mean just winning a few games, which I hope starts tonight. I hope your answer about a winning season is a little bit pessimistic, but they are so bad right now, it could be true.
What if we’re all dead? What if the aliens pull the plug? What if the asteroid collides or California slides into the sea? Or Pyongyang starts WWIII?

So you made the determination about Jones already (…is the future) after how many ab’s? But not enough ab’s so far regarding Parker. Hmmmm.
No I did not make a determination, but screwing with him all ready is not a good way to develop him , Bochy Super Fan Boy !
You’re yanking my chain re Bochy but that’s ok
Bochy Super Fan Boy…(giggle)
The numbers really don’t lie.
For the Giants just to reach 90 wins they would have to go 63-21.
To equal last year’s win total of 87, they would need to finish 60-24.
To get to .500, they need to go 54-30.
Finally, to avoid 100 losses, Giants would have to finish 36-48 (assuming they don’t make up any rainouts).
By the end of this season, if the Giants have avoided 100 losses, and have managed to turn in a .500 record for a month, I’d take it. Small potatoes, but the only potatoes we can hope for in 2017.
They still have to go to Washington, where they have a difficult time, 9 more with the Bums (even though we have a winning record against), 8 more with the Rox, 12 with the D-backs, etc.
Have not played the Pirates yet, and the Pirates always play great vs the Giants, except that 1 game in October 2014 .
Indeed. My “hope we get there” is the 2013 mark of 76-86. That being unlikely, I’d be happy with 72-90. To do that we have to go 45-39, which (with Bum) could be doable.
OK — we know what has to be done. Let’s just do it. 63-21 is only .750 baseball. Lets get her done. .500 by July 31. Go Giants
Are you taking to many pain killers for your shoulder .
I hope this was sarcastic.
Bum and Duggar both started Re-hab yesterday http://www.milb.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?gid=2017_06_25_angrok_giarok_1&t=g_box&sid=milb
Finally ONE good sign; winning MLB games is overrated. /S
Probably see Duggar in September.
He was on such a great trajectory of scoring wRC+ of 130 at every level and moving up every year. Injuries may have ended that but it comes with any sport. If Posey goes uninjured in 2011 think of what might have been.
Duggar still only has one year of track record.
#6 Rounder in 2015. Two years but it was at three levels.
http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=sa827165&position=OF
San Jose and Richmond last year.
Tore it up in both.
Career: 13 assists in 125 games. I want Defense back in CF.
So what’s your plan for him? Does he have to produce or do they just stick him out there?
.300 in Sac this year
.333 in Spring Training with flashy defense and a few stolen bases.
That should win him the job unless they go after Cain as a FA.
Give it up. Span’s UZR/150 is 5.4. I used to put all my eggs in DRS. There is more to defense than DRS.
I have never found any defensive rating for minor league players out side of the raw data of Errors and Assists. I do not know UZR but if you are saying Span is above average I have not seen it in the few highlights I see [MLB Condensed Version].
What I’m saying is you should go find yourself a dog to kick around.
Not sure what you mean.
I like Span as a current decent CF and a better hitter than some say. His average is up there for these Giants, although his OBP is lower than most lead-off hitters. I think he will decline enough next year with age that he will be better as a Fourth OF.
” although his OBP is lower than most lead-off hitters.”
Well, sometimes it does help to look a little further. His OBP was pretty poor early in the year- below .300. He had a couple injuries that affected him. His OBP has gone from that number to the current .326, due to a .379 OBP in the last 4 weeks.
As I’ve said since last year, I expect this year’s numbers to be close to his career numbers-about .285 BA, 350 OBP.
Here’s a primer on UZR. His is 5.4 this year.
http://www.fangraphs.com/library/defense/uzr/
Span is #19 among lead-off OBP so he is not miserable but he is ‘lower than most lead-off hitters”… http://www.fangraphs.com/leaderssplits.aspx?splitArr=19&strgroup=season&statgroup=2&startDate=2017-03-01&endDate=2017-11-01&filter=OBP%7Cgt%7C0.3&position=B&statType=player&autoPt=true&sort=8,1&pg=2
If I sounded like I do not like him this year then I said it poorly. He is not the problem with this season; I just think next year his decline will make an opening for MyGuy™ Duggar. Span will be a great Bench asset in 2018.
Thanks for the UZR primer link. I do like Fangraphs® and their work.
You chose to ignore the progression I showed you. It’s typical here.
Note- he’s 3rd in OPS and Slg percentage , and 5th in OBP, among NL lead off hitters with at least 200 PA. All told, he’s in the top 4 lead off hitters in the NL. Sorry to burst your bubble.
“Uncle”
I have already given up. Span is always a mistake or 2 from a return to whipping boy status
All you can do is present the facts. It is human that we look for someone to blame when things go wrong.
Jebavy? He can D I hear
I have heard that too.
Duggar was ahead of him on the Giants prospect list but now …?
Maybe August if they do a total house cleaning, which is doubtful.
I am hoping that he plays in Sac this year and has a shot at CF in Spring Training.
2018: Shaw, Duggar and Pence/Span platoon in RF.
Noodle arm Span in RF? Shudder.
But if he platoons with HP8 he brings .291 career vs. RHP to compensate for it.
Don’t sleep on Jebavy. Besides Duggar still has to AAA after he gets up to speed.
(1) When will the winning start?
Winning comes from competing. Winning cannot be predicted. Effort * Energy * Attitude * Passion * Being Prepared * Work Ethic * Being Coachable * Body Language require zero talent.
(2) Should Bochy have removed Ryder Jones in a double switch in his second game? No
(3)Will Smarge’s ERA ever get below 4? Doubtful
(4) How many dingers will BB9 end up with in 2017? 29
(5) Is this going to be Buster’s best offensive season ever? No
Nice Honesty, great post .
Headline reads: “It’s Time to Put a Hurting on the Rockies for All the Pain They Have Caused Us Lately”
Trouble is it is the ROX time and Bud Black has got their attention and in ARZ Torey Lovullo is the right Skipper for the right spot.
Go Dbacks!
#AnybodyButDoggers
Rockies are struggling a bit. Hope they don’t get well at our expense, but I’m fearful.
Both teams keeping a worried eye on the streaking Dodgers.
#6 where will Belts avg wind up?
220s
230s
240s
250s?
#7 who will play CF other than span next year?
#8 who will the backup catcher be?
So what do they do with Span? He’s signed thru 2018. You folks never quit.
I’m with you. He can hit. But who will his sidekick be? Gorkys?
I leave it to the great unwashed.
Yeah, that’s us, Mr. Clean.
It’s Pine-Sol for you, pal.
I doubt he can stay over .275 and he’s no longer a SB threat. I think we can do better.
Make every effort to trade him, even if we have to absorb as much as $10MM of the $13MM we’ll owe him for 2018 and 2019 buyout.
What we’ll “never quit” is harping on his rapidly declining CF skills. Worst CF in the NL. Find a legit CF and *maybe* we can move Span to LF.
if you were educable, I’d help you out.
I’m going to tonight’s game because apparently I’m a masochist.
I heard you and I are banned from Spring Training from now on. Scapegoat #309
But they won both the games I went to!
Begging makes us look pathetic … I already tried it, I know.
I just checked the record for games I’ve gone to so far this season (including spring training. They’ve won 6 out of 10 games that I’ve been to (which seems surprising).
Go more often, that’s a 0.600 record!
Hopefully with tonight’s game, it’ll be .636!
I am 1 win in 1 game: 1.000 pct. But that was an All-Karma-Game as Brownie and I were guests of “Mrs. avwh”. The Tumblers of the Universe all fell in place that night. Unrepeatable.
Attapeach!
Will you be wearing this? https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/9b69ec3b4392bab33982d0a7e477a2b19c5fbe34f7d532eccd042dd649993047.jpg
I think that’s tonight’s giveaway
Acknowledgement is the first step towards recovery.
I resemble that remark;)
Good luck piece.
Post some pictures for us please.
She wont be able to, and neither will I. We will be deep into relishing Giants playing bad ass ball, then celebrating galore after we win.
MadBum with 3 scoreless, hitless innings with one walk, 2 strikeouts in the Arizona Rookie League Yesterday
Boxscore just below on my post. And yes, he needs to pitch this year starting in July.
1. Define “winning”. I don’t think the Giants will lose 100 games but neither will they play .500 for the rest of the season or get anywhere near .500 for the season. MadBum’s return will improve the team.
2. Yes, standard National League double switch.
3. Not in 2017.
4. 24
5. No.
Did u survive life without ac? Rough stuff
Cheated after several hours and used propane generator and power was back about 3 AM.
I am a softy or in current terms a snowflake.
Did you make it to the forest?
Crazy white water. Awesome How does prop Gen compare to gas?
More expensive but more convenient. Plus propane or any fuel is more $ because live in boonies.
The River here (Klamath) is high and clear for this time of year. Some of the creeks on the Klamath and Salmon are high for late June because of snow melt and soil storage.
OFF TOPIC
Great text exchange between Adam Gase and Peyton Manning last yr when Miami lost their QB
“Gase said, ‘Hey 18, Tannehill went down,’” . “Gase said, ‘I think he’s going to miss some time. The first question I’m going to get at the press conference in the morning is if I’m going to try to bring you to Miami. What do you want me to tell them?’” Gase was Peyton’s offensive coordinator in Denver.
Peyton texted back ‘You tell them I could probably come play, but there’s no way I can miss carpool the next two weeks.’ So I’m done.”
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2017/06/23/archie-manning-adam-gase-reached-out-to-peyton-after-ryan-tannehill-was-injured/

2. Yes

Robin Williams died from Lewy Body Dementia. I think CC brought this up months ago
Amazing interview with Bobcat Goldthwait

Slater is fine, Bochy just thinks that Gorkys is the man now,
Robin was a huge SF Giant fan – told us to watch this interview about Lewy Body Dementia.

1. If you mean playoff contention, hopefully next year. Realistically, probably gonna take longer
2. No, let the kid play through the error, and give him a chance to redeem himself. The Giants weren’t going to win that game anyway. Just let Jones get accustomed to the speed of the game, and major league pitching. No amount of game simulation, or watching from the sidelines can help prepare him better than actually playing.
3. Sure, 3.74 – 3.89 is doable for him. Limit the long ball
4. 25
5. It’s possible, but 2012 was his best season to date, no doubt. I don’t think he’ll have a better season this year.
See ya.
1) After Colorado. 9 games pre ASB, we go 6-3.
2) It was a double switch brought on by Moore’s awful start.
3) Yes, but barely. Like 3.98. ERAs very high this year. Of 41 qualifying starters in NL, median ERA is appx 4.19
4) 24. Willie Mays Plaza. Batting average gets up to .275, OPS .950.
5) No. 2012 will remain his high water mark. Too much wear and tear from catching will drag him down.
Smarge is a fighter and his ERA will go more toward 4.0 than 5.0 as the season grinds on. Belt will hit 23 HR this year … at the cost of his BA. In terms of RBI, this will definitely be Buster’s worst season ever but the man hasn’t had enormous opportunity for RBI as in the past. He may yet win the batting title unless the grind of catching causes a late season funk. When will the winning start? Especially with MadBum back this is definitely a team that is MUCH better than .347. I predict we’ll avoid the scourge of 100 defeats and finish out the year’s last 84 games with a 40-44 record, thus at 67-95. We’re not a very good squad but I truly believe we’re not God awful either. Moore will surprise on the upside since he might have had TJ surgery but he was 4.08 after that and he’ll head back down the ERA ladder soon.
Other than fans having a better post-game feeling after 10 more games in what other way would 72-90 be better than 62-100? The answer is: in no other way.
No difference so Giants should just go 42-120 and lock that number 1 pick up
Since I believe small differences in draft position make little difference, I’d rather see them go 72-90 because I, personally, want to be entertained more by their play than in the first 78 games.
Melancon was “shocked” by Rosenthal’s story. Bochy called it “mouse turds.”
Well, then maybe the boys should rally around each other and win some games….otherwise, these things happen. It’s,just the way it goes in sports and reporting
Yep. This is a shocking collapse, and people are going to look for explanations. Kawakami and Brisbee have more plausible ones.
Agreed
Of course he was shocked because it was much ado about nothing. Rosenthal tried to disclaim his way out of his story by noting that Trevor Hoffman followed his own routine under Bochy at San Diego. Rosenthal was trying to whip himself into a furor over a nonexistent controversy.
Shat out by a mouse wearing a bow tie.
What is it he throws now? Is it true or isn’t it? Dont really care if he’s shocked
Another Arenado-Giants highlight reel coming up. NA will be a UFA in 2020. God, I hope he goes to the AL and out of LA.
1-tonight
2-considering that point in the game, and if Bochy had a talk with him on what he was thinking with the move, I thinks it’s all good. Jones probably is mature enough to understand what all went into it.
3-yeah. It will.
4-35
5-no.
No reason to win NOW and help the Dodgers.
We should start worrying about the Padres.
We should start worrying about eclipsing the Mets win/loss record of 1962.
Good luck tonight to Draymond nabbing the DPOY.
Does he have a designated driver?
Mom.
“Pole vaulting over mouse turds” will live in infamy
Love it.
I must say that this blog has never seemed more alive.
Melancon was brought here to take ownership of the bull pen? Not sure if I read the guy right, and I could be wrong, but does Melancon seem a little full of himself? Personally, I’m miffed about shaking up a bullpen tradition. You do not mess with that sort of stuff as a newbie coming into a new club. And what happened? He blew game 1. Own it.
Shhhh. Relax. I think the whole story is a reach to explain this terrible season.
Go read McCovey Chronicles counterpoint.
You’ve got it exactly right, Matthew. Rosenthal’s article is an attempt to create a tempest in a teapot. It’s tabloid journalism which, like all tabloids, tries to make controversy where very, very little exists.
I’m a sucker for tabloids. They’re e like Mad Magazine. So I’ll attempt to look at Rosenthals piece from a comic stand point. I’ll pretend he’s writing for the enquirer.
I think that’s the proper spirit in which to read “Mouse Turds Over San Francisco” (the title he should have chosen).
Mouse turds. Bochys awesome.
I just read the story. ZZZZZZZZZ…
I’m a raving insomniac and severe drowsiness was also my reaction.
Dirk Nowitzki’s wife is a smoke show…( watching to see if Dray wins DPOY)
Watching RW’s eyes pop out of their sockets if he doesn’t win MVP will be worth the gander too.
I’m glad Samardzija is starting tonight and I hope the club hits for him. His 4.74 ERA isn’t bad enough to merit 2-9. He’s definitely one guy I’m pulling for in the second half.
I just perused Samardzija’s statistics on bbref and this guy has been plagued by bad run support his entire career!! His career ERA is 4.1 which most years is about league median yet he’s been “rewarded” with a 61-81 record when 71-71 would be his “just” record (assuming a median team is .500).
I think I read a stat where his ERA with MLB average defense would be a run and a half better….which is what my eyes tells me watching the D behind him
His “stuff” is definitely low-mid 3 stuff.
Filthy 2 seam
Looks like a beautiful day in the BA what I can see from the TV. Also have a beautiful blue sky up here in the NW.
The weather was great. I didn’t even put on my jacket the whole night. But I was also jumping up often during this game, especially the 8th inning. And it was Pride night, so lots of dancing music.
Nice first for Samardzija.
My other guy.
My guy, Span.
Is Span still your guy?
According to my submission to Hack.
I chose Hunter Pence, so you/Span are ahead of me!
Nice shot, you are moving up.
He’s lost a step. His CS equals his SB (3) this season. He used to be a 10-15 SB guy at this point in a season.
Was that Bochy’s call to take him out of the risk for DP or was that Span’s decision?
Atta boy Buster!!
If he had only done that 2x yesterday
Did Bruce give the, Im mad as hell and I’m not going to take it anymore, speech?
Greetings from AT&T https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/eb43b91020a7f5a37091fd853a7ccaed4cffbfbd0644bbd5415a028607c1bb58.jpg
Shark!
Grab some pine, Peachy!
nice seats.
Nice seats.
I’m pretty sure you have to attend every Giants game the rest of the year.
Along with gamervixen.
Slater is apparently good to pinch hit and run, but they decide he can’t be in the lineup for two more days. Seems arbitrary to me. With all the caution they take with players these days, I don’t think there are fewer injuries
I’ll at least nibble, if not quite bite on that. Do you think the careers might be longer?
It doesn’t seem like it to me. Great players always played many seasons and lasted into their late 30s/early 40s. Players with less talent were always done more quickly.
That was Jones’ ball.
Takes awhile for Crawford to trust the new guys.
Draymond won defensive player of the year.
uh, oh. (sorta rhymes with Arenado)
Well done, indeed.
Nice nifty play BCraw.
At Finnerty’s. What’s this. A lead?
and two men on base!
Guys definitely seem more locked in today than before. Thanks Rosenthal
Seriously, thanks Rosenthal. That story might be just what the Giants needed to play with some edge
The Little Midget That Could🚂
Things are looking up.
As usual, Belt leads the team in extra base hits with 30, which is five more than Posey.
Posey barely leading in total bases, 124 – 121
Last few days Posey has become an RBI machine
Unfortunately the machine was not on automatic, yesterday.
Mentioned this yesterday but Giants losing has really cost Finnerty’s. Total of 5 customers here right now including me.
West coast starting time can’t help the crowd size, either. 11:20 where you are now.
Even so– much less than usual
Smarge pitching with an attitude tonight. I love it!
Crawford is havin a game.
Atta babe Gorkys.
Atta babe Span.
There ya go, keep it going gang.
They don’t look boring tonite
Atta babe Joltin Joe Jr.
I cant figure out Span– either multiple hits in a game or none. Now up to 285. Even with 4 home runs softest 285 ever.
Maybe you should look at his game logs.
Now THIS is entertaining baseball. I think Bruce really did give that speech because they’re clicking on all cylinders so far. I just don’t think CO can get much out of Shark tonight.
And it’s especially refreshing that it took a Ken Rosenthal piece and/or this long (i.e. buried in the standings in a lost season) to do so. Such urgency.
let’s not put this in the W column just yet. our stellar bull pen is yet to be heard from..
I had not, and I may add my post was of the utmost sarcasm, negativity, and nihilism with regards to a ship that has not only lost its course, but veered straight off the edge of the baseball world. For Bochy to exclaim “enough is enough” this far into a season that should have “enough is enoughed” 2 months ago, is more than enough grounds for his termination. May I reiterate, this time, positively dripping with maple syrup sarcasm…
Such urgency.
The Not Quite Enough Tour kicked off in Phoenix back in April, and has wowed (owwwed?) crowds around many cities!
You old sweet talker…
you’re a pisser..love you pal..
Right back atcha, buddy boy.
The Giants just needed some extra peaches in their diet 🍑 🍑 🍑
Did the Rockies send Senzatela to the bullpen? He’s 9-3 as a starter.
I guess it’s partly to conserve his innings pitched.
Span did not care for Belt tying him in team lead for triples.
The Shark is dealing
Humping up to 97, too. He’ll leave the game after 7 shutout innings. I don’t want him relieved by Meathead, however.
Man, that’s gotta be the most efficient 5-innings I’ve seen from a Giants starter in a looong time
Nice to see the Giants doing the slow drip torture to someone else rather than having it done to them game after game.
Belt back over .800 OPS
This is the way its supposed to look
This is what we thought we should have at the beginning of the season.
The Shark figured out how to get Arenado to get himself out! 🙂
No fair looking it up, but Ryder Jones middle name is the last name of a US President. Who is it? Hint: The president has the exact same big league batting average as Jones does, currently
Grant?
Close
AKsisterfan guesses Jackson.
Getting colder
Johnson?
No: Hint, This President served only marginally longer than Jones has spent in the big leagues
mckinley?
Correct
Ryder Hoover Jones is kinda catchy.
Hoover is Dyson’s middle name.
https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/e2bcc42cf0a99c2ddf72a40cc3e51d6b85bb347fc1fc8afabfed3b09f1d829e6.jpg
I almost looked that up. I don’t like all his work, but Jeff Koons had something going here.
Ford?
Died of a cold caught at his inauguration. Guess I’m the only one playing.
in buffalo iirc
correct
wrong
assassinated i thought
By an upset job seeker?
That was William Henry Harrison. McKinley was assassinated.
That’s easy. Ryder Fillmore.
Ryder Trump Jones?
No.
Ryder Obama Jones? Ryder Clinton Jones? Ryder Bush Jones?
No. I thought that the hint was a giveaway
Clinton had a higher “hitting” (on) percentage than Jones currently
Ha!
Strap in. It’s bullpen time. Leading off: Strick9.
Lord help us
Terrible 0-2 pitch
Krukow said it was a T-ball pitch. True.
Strickland’s lucky that wasn’t yanked.
Very true.
Pitching change anyone?
Well, people on here bitch when he changes too quick, and bitch when he changes too slow…so you decide.
Okert had to be warming up there for a reason. It’s all Strickland’s inning now.
Like Okert has been lights out
For one batter? Then what righty? Kontos? Gearrin? Dyson? He pitched around Blackmon, so let it ride…
Yeah, you know what, I’m done guessing.
Dont try to use logic and strategy with this blog. What are you thinking?
It was right on time tonight. Shark had thrown 112 pitches. He gave us some serious juice tonight.
They are great with the retrospectoscope
Arenado looming…
Here we go again
Whew.
Everyone take a deep breath
I need a drink. Again.
Ok.
Reverend Chop Chop finally got one!
Arenado is not looking happy.
He was downright pissy and it felt greaaaaat.
Did anybody have this kid as a MyGuy?
Transaction:
RHP Martin Agosta placed on the voluntarily retired list.
Never sit on a lead, big or small. Add on boys.
Have yourself a game BCraw
Atta babe BCraw.
Com’on Ryder Jones!!!!
I’m sitting the next section over from Jones’ family
Ask them why they picked such a weird middle name
They had considered but rejected Van Buren
Knew you were in the family section from the pic. Here’s mine from last year against the same team. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/a33404bc7b4b1bd586ac03949ed27e9a26964a90fcf8ba9f2acbc7b6e4fe240d.jpg
Jones has looked overmatched
Unless it is the beginning or end of the season every winning streak– no matter how long– starts after a loss and ends with a loss. So let’s get this one and start the streak
Dyson looked like a real relief pitcher in the 8th
I say … leave Dyson out there for the 9th.
Let him bat.
Wrong. Not only is he a one inning guy, but Melancon needs to get untracked whether we are trying to trade him or are stuck with him
I’m just interested in one perfect night of pitching, hitting, and fielding followed by a bullpen shutdown. Dyson is that shutdown.
Me too, but Melancon needs to exorcize the demons
That’s not an error.
Sorry, it is
Atta babe Gorkys. Hit the hard, good things happen. Way to hustle.
Atta babe KT. The ‘ol 110 foot double.
Even though this is a non-save situation, I would love to see Melancon get in there.
He could make it a save situation.
I bet he comes in with a chip on his shoulder
Hope so. It’d be about time. He needs that nasty SOB kick to his step.
Can’t create your own save situation.
What do you guys think? Giants roll off 20 wins in a row?
At least
Yep.
Win here and we can pick up a game on the Dodgers
I think it was Surf that saying getting Dyson was a steal. He may be right.
Was a no lose situation. Hopefully he’s a steal
I’m agreeing with you.
Wish they would have traded a so-so pitcher for Jarrod Dyson, like Seattle did. That guy, at AT&T patrolling CF? Yes.
We have no so so bullpen pitchers. They are all terrible
Nate Karns is 29 with a career 4.40 ERA. Their bullpen is not “all terrible”.
Yes. My guy, the vacuum.
I love Kelby’s speed. We need more speed on this team.
Hey, he got his first XBH of the year!
Notre Dame has pitched well this year I think.
Like Greek Giant said: We got to put a hurt on the Rockies.
Rockettes are a mess right now
About time.
They are falling apart.
Yes, work on that run differential boys.
Panik closing in on .280. Pence closing in on .270Posey closing in on .350
Pence @ .270 with a sub .700 OPS, Huntquin Arias.
How about Span? He can hit a bit, no?
over 280
Not bad. Not bad at all.
20 wins in a row fella’s …. here we go!!
Best part of this night will be Shark getting the W.
Overdue.
Have you been watching this season. Im not counting on anything yet
It’s a 7 run lead. I think we can loosen the clamps on this one.
How many runs did the bullpen give up in one inning versus the Braves last week?
I’m not watching anymore if we blow this game
I’ve said that about 40 times this year already
Beat up that Rockies bullpen
I would rather see Crick pitch the 9th with a 7-9+ run lead than Melancon with a 1-3 run lead every day of the week.
And twice on Sunday.
Who are these guys? How about Crawford leading team in RBIs again?
Liking my chances
As Joe Angel said back in the day, ” The Giants…are in the WIN column”!
Have a great night everyone. Let’s make it two in a row. Get Cain some run support.
Dodgers hearing footsteps
A perfect end to a perfect night.
19 wins to go!!!
Dbacks enjoying the ground gained. Rock slide. Beware below.
Is that Tony Bennett? It has been a long time.
His vocal cords were rusty
ONE IN A ROW. As the late Mao Tse Tsung (I think, could have Chou En Lai) said ” A journey of a thousand miles begins with one small step. “
I think Confucius said that. Chou said to Mao, six thousand miles on horseback is a long ride. You sure about this? Mao said, we march.
Confuscious couldnt hit the curve
Bet he could beat out a ground ball to short
Would definitely trip over his beard which was whiter and longer than Charlie Blackman’s, though not by much
Even the 62 Mets beat someone once in a while
And in 69, they were miraculous!
Hope we dont have to wait 7 years
Could be.
40-120. “Don’t we need to play those other two games?” Umm…no.
See. Giants talent showed up big tonight. Crawford threw strikes after every great and routine play he made. Which were a lot. Hitters looked in mid season form. Maybe they can turn this thing around with a hot streak that’s one for the ages.
If they can keep this up until MadBum comes back, I’m giving them a legitimate shot to turn it around. But it is just one win against a struggling team, let’s not make too much of it.
When the Rox got the WO sweep against us, they looked like world-beaters. Now they’ve lost six in a row and are in third place. There’s no explaining this game!
Not so much the win against a struggling team, but a win for a struggling team. Yes!!!!! Nailed it!
It is a pretty damn gratifying win. I just don’t want to be disappointed tomorrow by a Cain dud.
Oh. Reality check. Crap. Hitters going to have to dial it up a notch. That’s another frustrating thing about this season. You don’t see much momentum spill over to the next day. But I will say the Giants had the look of an angry pirate tonight.
Yeah, they definitely came out to prove the naysayers wrong and finally showed that edge we’ve been “bitching” about on this blog for weeks.
Tomorrow’s game will be more telling but today’s game affirmed a lot of my beliefs about this team.
Too late.
Typical
Ryder Jones still being too aggressive at the plate. Nunez is supposed to return by the end of the week, no?
It’s that Giants call-up same ol’ song and dance of “I know I’ll get benched if I don’t produce right away, so I’ll press to produce, leading me to have terrible at bats, leading to my inevitable benching.” Seen it too many times at this point.
It’s a win!! https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/a3827072f41e30e8fee515ab9d24a58ed166e3bcf9389f5e4e440af1205cf36f.jpg
Peaches Magic. They do so well when you attend. Go to all of the rest of the games. TO will foot the bill.
So I open my door to my enemies
I ask can we wipe the slate clean.
They tell me to please go fuck myself.
You know you just can’t win…
W! peach it!
Must be hell freezing over. Sac, Richmond, SJ, and Augusta all won too!
Good outing for Beede (8IP, 2R, 7K), Bryan Reynolds with 4 hits, Aramis Garcia with 2 HR.
Sounds like Hwang will opt out of his Giants contract. Too bad. He’s one of my guys, and I would have prefered seeing him on the roster over someone like Hill before he got DFA’d.
That’s too bad. Where did you hear that? I checked CSN BA, the Chronicle and the Mercury News sites and didn’t see any articles. The weekend before last, Baggs speculated on Marty Lurie’s show that maybe the Giants will tell him to wait until the end of July, when some moves may be made and he could get called up. But I don’t know how those minor league contracts work, whether or not he could sign a contract extension for a month or through the rest of the River Cats season.
Baggs tweeted it last night after the game.
Good for him. He’s not getting the opportunity he’s seeking with the Giants, so it’s best for him to move on. I really felt he could’ve contributed, especially with a plethora of injuries this team had to deal with this year but things aren’t really panning out for him in the minors and his numbers simply aren’t all that intriguing to warrant a callup over the younger prospects, and veterans always have the priority under Bochy/Sabean. He sacrificed a lot of his resources to get a shot to play in the majors, and if it’s in his best interest to return to the KBO, he should do so.
Every Giants win feels so special now.
There’s something in the air here this morning… smells like Victory!
I for one plan to enjoy it for several hours today… before our streak inevitably ends at one. Giants! Go!!

If the pitch tracker technology is close to accurate that HP umpire should be working in the bush leagues and nowhere close to the major leagues. Close pitches on the edge are tough to get right all the time but that guy was giving lots of strikes on pitches obviously outside the zone. David Ross on ESPN gave Posey lots of run for pitch framing but that ump was clearly predisposed to call strikes and get batters swinging. How does the league keep a guy like that, he needs to go down to AA until he can get a clue.
Recorded the game and watched with coffee and breakfast. Great win. Our guys needed to knock the ball around the field and score some runs. You know you’re doing work when Kelby executes perfectly, and gets an RBI double on a productive out. Shark is a strong #2 to Cueto, and if the Bum we love is back…
A ton of losses to take back with Ws, but a 8-4 (9-3?) run to the ASB would build some second half momentum. We still need the 25-man reinforced ASAP, while concurrently building the 2019-2020 teams. Get to work, gentlemen.

Did you check out Ryder’s family- it’s a different one than we saw on Sunday.
