It’s bad enough to get walked off in one game but for it to happen to your team in a double-header sweep makes for a double agony.
I am a blessed man. I have been blessed with many wonderful people and things, many of which I don’t deserve.
But I am also a San Francisco Giants fan in 2026 and I don’t deserve that either… It is an infliction I don’t wish upon anyone.
Game 1
The Giants lost game by a score of 3-2. It was an exciting, frustrating, fun, and ultimately agonizing game. Agony is today’s theme, as you can see. The Giants took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning with Logan Webb coming to the mound for the bottom of the frame. In that bottom of the first Kyle Scwarber took Logan deep to get the Phillies right back in the game. Other than that disastrous bottom of the ninth, it was the key to the game: Webb was not able to get the shutdown inning and it hurt. From the rest of the way Webb was very good and he smartly avoided pitching to Schwarber, a Future Hall-of-Famer, the rest of the game by walking him twice. Webb would ultimately go seven innings and allow seven hits and only that run. It was perhaps his best start of the season against a team with more than a few sluggers playing in a bandbox of a park.
Then the bottom of the ninth happened. Ryan Walker started the ninth with at 2-1 lead and left it as the losing pitcher as the Phillies scored two runs to rally. It is nothing short of Managerial malfeasance for Tony Vitello to put Walker in as the closer after his 2025 season and his troubles earlier this year. It is just not happening for Ryan Walker as the closer. It is one of those head-scratchers: Why on Earth do Managers keep making the same mistake when empirical evidence is clear?! If Walker pitches another game as the closer when other pitchers are available for the Giants then I am calling for the firing of Vitello and Posey!
Game 2
Don’t ask.
Tonight’s Game
The Giants travel to Florida to play the Tampa Bay Rays for three games in St. Petersburg. The pitching matchup will be Ray versus McClanahan at 7:10 PM, St. Pete time.
Today is May Day, an important holiday in Italy to celebrate Workers everywhere. So, I am keeping this short. Next week I will write a long post on how bad this Giants team is. Right now it looks unfixable. The players forget the outs. The biggest sluggers are doing nothing. The starting pitching… the Bullpen.. you get the point. After. yesterday’s double header sweep I can say two positive things: Casey Schmitt is hitting very well and the infield defense is playing flawlessly.
