With the season in pause, let’s take a snapshot this week. The picture shows what Giants’ prospects are doing and how some of us, as TWG MyGuy Scouts are doing. This is not your standard “Top Prospects” list of which there are many. MyGuy’s unique question is, “Who will have a break-out season?”. Because of this we get some quirky results but hey, that is how real life works, right?
The Prospects: Position Players
#1 – Malique Ziegler: OF, 2016 round 22, 21-year-old, 164 wRC+, Augusta, +103% .
#2 – Heath Quinn: OF, 2016 round 3 pick; San Jose, wRC+ up from 78 to 149; +91%.
#3 – John Riley (C/1B), a local San Jose kid who has struggled for years. He is now playing for
San Jose, living at home; wRC+ of 179 in Augusta before he got to San Jose; +83.6%
#4 – Jalen Miller: 2B, 2015 round 3 pick, 21-year-old, San Jose, +66.7%
#5 – Jacob Heyward: OF, 2016 round 18 pick, 22-year-old, San Jose, +33.9%
#6 – Dylan Davis,: OF, 2014 round 3, 24-year-old, Richmond, +28%
#7 – Ryan Howard, SS, 2016 Fifth round, 23-year-old, San Jose, +25%
#8 – Gio Brusa, 1B/OF, 2016 Sixth round, 24-year-old, San Jose, 14 HR’s, +21.7%
#9 – Mac Williamson, OF, 2012 Third round, 28-year-old, Sacramento, +12.8%
#10 – Luigi Rodriguez (OF), 25-year-old free agent signed last November. Troubled and
talented: signed at 16 from the Dominican Republic with the Indians, drug violation in
2015, at Richmond hitting close to .400 for two months and now in a 0-32 slump.
Others of note …
Jacob Gonzalez (#11) and Heliot Ramos (#18) suffer in this ranking due to such high numbers last year in the Rookie League; their wRC+ scores were 143 and 175 respectively. They were advanced two levels to Augusta but have not kept up their hot pace.
Shaw (#17) is repeating in Sacramento, tops the Giants farms system with 18 HR’s, a higher rate than last year but is down 30 points in his batting average.
Duggar (#15) repeated his fair success at Sacramento but has not had enough MLB time to gain that bonus. Don’t worry Duggar fans, he will get that time and end up near the top of this list.
The Prospects: Pitchers
#1 – John Gavin, 22-year-old, 8th round pick in 2017; Augusta with a 1.88 ERA. +67%
#2 – Logan Webb, 21, 4th round in 2014; San Jose with a 1.96 ERA. +58.1%
#3 – Jose Marte, 22-year-old, Augusta, 86 IP, 84 K’s. Improved 43.5%
#4 – Andrew Suarez, 25-year-old, 2015 round two, bright spot on MLB roster. +40.2%
#5 – Joey Marciano, 23-year-old, round 36, 2.58 ERA in Augusta, now in San Jose. + 39.8%
#6 – Jason Bahr, 23-year-old, round 5 in 2017, traded to Texas, 68.2 IP and 88K’s +39.2%
#7 – Garrett Cave, 22-year-old, round 4 in 2017, 72 IP, 77 K’s for Augusta. +30.3%
#8 – Franklin Van Gurp, 22-year-old, 2017 round 25, Augusta, 1.77 ERA, now in San Jose +30.1%
#9 – Patrick Ruotolo, 23-year-old, 2016 round 27, Richmond, 20 IP, 26 K, 2.70 ERA +23.7%
#10 – Melvin Adon, 24-year-old, Dominican Republic, 15 starts in San Jose. +19.9%
Others of note …
Shaun Anderson (#14) was so good last year that his rank is just mid-range here but he has just been called up to Sacramento. Fallen stars: Beede (#21) has declined by 35.2%; Steven Okert declined 73.7% to get last place on this list. Reyes Moronta would place #3 on this list but none of us picked him. Ooops!
