After last night’s 5-4 loss in Phoenix the Giants fell to 0-7 versus the Diamondbacks this season. Despite a fairly strong outing by Tyler Mahle who appears to be a much better pitcher since returning from his stint on the Injured List, the Giants were bested by DBacks starter, Eduardo Rodriguez.

The Giants have scored four or fewer runs in six of their seven games against the D-backs this season, but Monday’s output particularly featured a run of tough luck, especially early. Through the first four frames against southpaw Eduardo Rodriguez, they reeled off six hard-hit balls (excess of 95 mph) and came up with zero runs.

The club had five balls on the night with an xBA above .500 go for an out, a spate of balls finding the glove that ultimately cost them after a late offensive flurry — which featured Heliot Ramos’ first homer since May 10 — helped bring the go-ahead run to the plate on a pair of occasions.

The key to the game was the bottom of the fifth inning. The Giants had tied the game at 1 run per team when Arizona scored three runs thanks to a bases-clearing double by Geraldo Perdomo off Sam Hentges who once again, had a bad outing. Those runs were charged to Mahle who deserved better in his 4 1/3 innings of work totals. But that’s what the Giants bullpen is today.

The Giants scored in the top of the eighth (one run) and the top of the ninth (two runs) to make things interesting but they could do nothing with the tying run on first and one out. Ramos homered, so did Arenado. It was his 767,679th homer against the Giants in his career, the most against any team, of course.

Tonight’s Game

The Giants will throw RHP Landen Roupp (5-7, 4.07 ERA) on Tuesday night. The Diamondbacks will counter with RHP Brandon Pfaadt (0-1, 5.92), who has been called up from Triple-A.
