Greek Giant
The Giants defeated the St. Louis Cardinals by a score of 5-4 in 11 innings of a hard-fought baseball game. It was a fun watch, one that saw Rafael Devers continue to rake, in the form of two doubles (one of which hit off the wall in Triples Alley and would have been a home run in every other MLB, Little League, Texas League, Florida State League, Rookie League, Arizona Fall League, Mexican League, Cape Cod League and College Ballpark!) and a run driven in. Phew…
Devers finished 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and an RBI, becoming the first Giant to record 35 doubles and 35 homers in a single season since Hall of Famer Jeff Kent in 2002. Devers has been on fire over the last couple of weeks, batting .421 (24-for-57) with nine homers, five doubles and 22 RBIs over his past 15 games. He homered six times in seven games during the Giants’ recent road trip to Atlanta, Pittsburgh and New York and quickly kept that hot streak going upon returning home on Monday. He has not cooled off!
Devers was accompanied in his heroics by Bryce Eldridge, who went 2-4 as well and drove in three runs. He had the game-tying knock in the bottom of the tenth inning.
The Giants found the right spot in the line up for Devers, at second, and Eldridge batting third.
The Giants would take a 3-0 lead in the game before St. Louis battled back once Giant starter Logan Webb exited the game after his six innings of work in which he allowed only three hits and a run, that being a rocket shot off the bat of Alec Burleson in the top of the sixth inning that started the Cardinal Comeback.
The St. Louis club would eventually tie the game in the top of the ninth and threaten to win it before both teams scored a run in the tenth inning. In the bottom of the eleventh inning the Giants won the game this way: First, Drew Cavanaugh sacrificed Thurman to third. Thurman was the Manfred’s Man runner to start the inning. Then Shay Whitcomb hit a high and deep chopper to the St. Louis shortstop who could only wait for the ball to come to his glove as the winning run scored. The Giants celebrated and the Cardinals suffered a tough loss. It was a game of many twists and turns and an exciting contest.
“We showed the fight that we’ve got. We’ve been fighting all year, and people have counted us out. We’ve had some tough games. We’ve had some ups and downs, but we’re in the middle of September now, and the will to win tonight was pretty strong. I think you could sense that from everyone in the dugout.”
