“Today, we felt like an actual team offense, not just like a bunch of guys going up there to make stuff happen. At-bats were leading off each other. It led to wearing down starters, wearing down bullpen guys. That’s the kind of stuff we want going forward.”
-Eric Haase
The Giants beat the Milwaukee Brewers 12-9 yesterday in the final game of a four-game series. It was a wild one. There were homers, grand slams, errors, clutch hits galore and tremendous defense too. The Giants had leads of 6-1 and 12-3 and had to escape with the win after David Hamilton’s blast to center was caught by Jonah Cox to end the game with two runners on and the Giants about to let the Brewers tie the game. It was nervy but it was, in the end, wild one for San Francisco and one that saw them split the four games in Milwaukee after getting spanked in the first two contests.
There were many heroes in this one for the Giants. Let’s begin with Casey Schmitt’s led off homer in the top of the first that bounced off the top of the wall. The Giants later added two more runs in the inning thanks to an Eldridge single and a Chapman double. Matt Chapman seems to be emerging from his fog and the Giants are better for it. Bryce Eldridge too is emerging, only in this sense as a legit MLB hitter. He seems far more confident at the plate since he has been playing almost every day. He is now getting big hits and the Giants have more reason for optimism as a result. It’s called “Player Development” for a reason and it cannot happen if you yank your prospects up and down the MLB roster and the everyday line up like human yo-yos.
After the Brewers answered with a run in the bottom of the first, the failure to get the shutdown inning by Giant starter Adrian Houser, a sign of things to come in this game, the Giants added three runs in the top of the third inning thanks to a Lee double, a Chapman single and a sac fly by future All Star Casey Schmitt. That made the game 6-1 but the Milwaukee team did not roll over and play dead. They added two runs off Houser in the fifth and erasing his chance at a win in the process. He is my candidate for next DFA. With the game 6-3 in favor of the San Franciscans the Giants exploded for six runs in the top of the seventh inning. Eric Haase’s grand slam being the big blow before an Arraez sac fly and an Adames single drove in two more. That made it 12-3 and everyone is thinking “laugher”.
Nope.
The Brewers rallied again in the bottom of the seventh inning in yet another instance of a Giant pitcher failing to get the shutdown inning. It is a thang with this pitching staff and one of the reasons the team is so weak this season. Shutdown innings are critical, especially against good teams. The Milwaukeeans added two runs to make it 12-5 before a single run in the eighth inning and three in the bottom of the ninth made things interesting and sweaty for Giants fans.
It was an exciting and impressive display of hitting by the Giants. Jung Hoo is leading the way with his resurgence at the plate. Every member of the Giants’ starting lineup recorded at least one hit, fueling a 20-hit barrage that powered the club’s second double-digit showing of this road trip. Jung Hoo Lee finished 4-for-5 to continue his recent tear at the plate, while Bryce Eldridge and Matt Chapman chipped in with three hits apiece.
Lee is now riding a career-high 12-game hitting streak, slashing .522/.532/.696 with three doubles, one triple, one home run and seven RBIs over that span. His batting average is up to .322 on the season, which ranks fourth in the Majors behind Otto Lopez (.336), Brandon Marsh (.333) and Giants teammate Luis Arraez (.325).
The Giants won 1-0 and 12-9, in their past two games. Talk about an identity crisis!
