The Giants won a wild, ugly and wacky game yesterday, beating the Red Sox 9-5 to take two of three from the three-game series. It was a game that started off very ugly for the Giants then turned into a thing of beauty thanks to big hits by Helios Ramos and Yaz and some help from poor Red Sox defense. Boston was the beneficiary of sloppy Giants play in the top of the first inning but the Giants bounced back.

Since I am on assignment in Sicily this will be a short post. It is my last day here and it should be a destination for everyone. Sicily is a world unto itself with a variety of splendid landscapes, a fascinating city in Palermo, sparking seas, and tremendous food, especially the sweets!

Back to the Giants. I will end this post that winning when you do not play your best is a sign of a good team. The Red Sox are no slouch and Bob Melvin was right when he said they have good, athletic, talented young players. If Boston ever gets better starting pitching they could be a force in the AL in the near and long term.

The win gives the Giants a record of 44-34 and puts them 3.5 games behind the Dodgers in the NL West, good for second place as the Padres are slumping. Arizona cannot seem to figure out if it is a good team or not. The injury to Corbin Burnes severely hurts their chances so the NL West may come down to the Giants, Dodgers and Padres.

Dr. Lefty wrote a great piece on Saturday explaining or at least illustrating some strange moves by the Giants this week. Let us hope it is not a sign of dysfunction. Rafael Devers will come around and be a key player, perhaps the core of the Giants lineup. I predict he will be an All Star and MVP candidate before the year is out.

The Giants are off today.
