Greek Giant
Those words were uttered by Giants Manager Bob Melvin in reference to yesterday’s 7-5 loss to the Marlins in San Francisco. The win gave the Miami team a series win over the Giants. The Marlins have the 27th payroll in MLB whereas the Giants are 10th. The Marlins have an ownership consortium of billionaires who do not spend money on the team and who are actively trying to lose and who use the receipts generated from the Luxury tax and from Cable TV and whatever sad folks go to the games, to line their pockets and buff up their portfolios. In other words the ownership of the Miami Marlins cares diddlysquat about baseball. Derek Jeter quit rather than represent such a faceless group of villains. Kim Ng was fired after doing remarkable work for the Marlins.
The Marlins are pretty much everything that’s wrong with MLB from a franchise standpoint. Oh, and I forgot to mention their ballpark sucks and was built on land gifted to the team by the City of Miami in a sweetheart deal with previous owner and Uber-Villian, Jeffrey Loria. If there ever was a team everyone should hate in Major League Baseball it’s the Marlins. I won’t even bring up 2003 or 1997. Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against their players. They have some good ones and they have a talent for drafting that the Giants can only dream of. This is a team that once had a homegrown outfield of Giancarlo (Mike) Stanton, Christian Yelich and Marcel Ozuna! So what did the Marlins ownership do? They traded them away/let them walk into free agency. That’s the kind of team the Marlins are, a team that should be the subject of a comedy like Major League and the Indians back in the day. They, along with Athletics are teams that should be immediately sold to owners who want to win and who treat their fans and their cities with respect. Miami is a joke in baseball and it’s a shame because it is a city ready-made for a good MLB team.
So what do the Marlins do to the Giants?
So, of course they beat the Giants and their ace, Logan Webb when every win was essential and every game was a must-win if San Francisco wanted to stay in the mirage they call the NL Wild Card hunt. Logan Webb got bombed and gave up six runs in six innings of work. He owned it but we had all come to hope and expect better from the ace. It did not happen.
“It’s just a bad play and that leads to runs. I lost that game today. That was on me today. It just sucks. We scored five runs. We scored early and I feel like I was in a good spot. I had good stuff.”
-Logan Webb
Webb was referring to a bad throw to second that did not lead to an inning-ending double play. Instead it lead to disaster and another loss.
This Giants team just does not have it. It strikes me as a problem of not only a lack of talent but something rotten in the culture. Bob Melvin needs to get some harsh analyses after this year. I am not sure he is the guy to lead the Giants forward. When the Giants needed to be their best, these past two weeks they have been their worst. The team is now 66-68 and it’s best to use the remaining games as a platform to nurture and develop all the youngsters. Send the vets home packing to play golf or something. This season is over.
Sorry Giants fans.
