It was bound to happen, sooner or later. Patrick Bailey, a few months after being traded to Cleveland by the Giants, came back to haunt his former team by playing a huge role in yesterday’s 5-2 Guardians win. The Cleveland catcher went 2-3, drove in a run and scored a run as the Giants were mostly dominated by Guardians starting pitcher Gavin Williams. He would mix devastating hard sliders with 98-97 MPH gas to overpower the San Francisco line-up made up of a mix of veterans and aspiring Major Leaguers. The Giants lone runs came courtesy of a Devers double and a beautiful, opposite home run by Willy Adames in the top of the fourth inning. That homer would be Adames’s 200th for his illustrious career. It was a deep, hard drive to right against the wind. It was impressive and it was the lone highlight of the day for San Francisco when it came to hitting.

That homer temporarily gave Giants fans the illusion they were back in the game after Cleveland went ahead 3-0 in the bottom of the first inning in a rough frame for Landen Roupp, the San Francisco starter who seems to have lost his magic. In that inning he walked the lead off batter, then allowed three singles and a sac fly. Bailey’s two-out RBI single was a key hit in the game.
Adames and Basabe made errors, the latter of which lead to a Cleveland run. One highlight for the Giants: Carson Seymour seems to have re-invented himself as a dominant reliever. He consistently hit 98-99 MPH on the gun while blowing fastballs past innocent Clevelanders who had no idea the Giant reliever had that kind of stuff. He allowed one hit and struck out two batters in his one inning of work. He looked so good that were I a member of the Giants braintrust I would consider making him a starter.
Tonight’s Game
The Giants travel to Boston for a three-game series against the Red Sox, who have undertaken one of the most impressive turnaround’s in Major League History, at one point winning 27 of their past 30 games, to put them in playoff position. Tonight’s starters are Logan Webb facing Sonny Gray with the game scheduled to begin at 7:10 PM.
