Bo Davidson, the highly touted Giants outfield prospect, was a surprise call-up two days ago. He made his MLB debut last night and went 1-4 with a run scored and a stolen base to help the Giants defeat the Minnesota Twins, 5-2. Davidson’s feat was only the second time in Major League history, becoming the first Giants player to swipe a bag, record a hit and score a run in his MLB debut since Johnny Vergez on April 14, 1931. He also impressed with his composure and his attitude: a combination of confident and victorious, kind of like that guy we called “Barry Bonds.”

Davidson, who was called up from Triple-A Sacramento to replace the injured Jung Hoo Lee (groin contusion), made a fast impression when he stepped into the batter’s box to face Twins right-hander Zebby Matthews in the bottom of the first inning.

Davidson fell behind, 0-2, but he battled back to a full count and then lined the ninth pitch he saw — a 91 mph cut fastball to right field to collect his first career hit, a 103.8 mph single. Davidson’s milestone hit drew a loud ovation from the 27,466 fans in attendance, which included his mom Donna, his brother Shakym, his girlfriend Tiera and his daughter Oaklynn.

Drew Gilbert had a big game going 3-4 and driving in three runs while scoring two as the leadoff man and hitting a home run in the process. That big blast came in the bottom of the fifth inning. He raised his average to .237. If Gilbert could find a way to hit above .260 he would become a very valuable, everyday player for the Giants. His combination of speed, power and superb outfield glove with range not seen since Garry Maddox, gives us Giants fans hope for a fine center fielder. Brett Harris played first base for the absent and banged up Bryce Eldridge. He went 2-4 with two runs driven in as well.

Tristan Beck earned the win to raise his record to 1-2.

Giant starter Blade Tidwell was forced to leave the game after pitching 3 1/3 innings. He was reported to have elbow discomfort, not a good sign and yet another potential injury for the Giants. The Giants are surely setting a record for injuries and players who left the team via trade for one season. It’s truly unbelievable.
