Devers and the Kids Lead the Way Over the Braves

In what has become a final month of the season with new faces playing every day for the Giants the San Franciscans managed to beat one of the best teams in Baseball, in the Atlanta Braves, by a score of 7-3. That win last night amounted to a series sweep in Atlanta as it was a make up game for the contest rained out earlier in the season when the Giants were in town and took the first two games of the series.

Last night Rafael Devers hit his 30th home run of the season. He continued to torment the Braves starting pitcher, Bryce Elder. On June 27, when the Giants downed the Braves, 5-0, Devers went 2-for-2 with two home runs against Elder. That homer made Devers the second Giant to hit thirty home runs in a season since Barry Bonds. Last season Willy Adames hit his 30th on the final day of the regular season.

Devers picked up where he left off in the top of the first when he hit a solo shot off Elder, marking his third home run in as many at-bats against the Braves starter. Devers went on to walk in his next two at-bats against Elder. Devers is 6-for-7 with three home runs and four walks in 11 plate appearances against Elder. It’s called “ownage”, as Mike Krukow would say.

Turner Hill, Jonah Cox, Bryce Eldridge and Devers combined for six of San Francisco’s seven RBIs and helped the Giants down the Braves. Hill, a 27-year-old outfielder who made his MLB debut on August. 15, had the biggest impact for the Giants with a pinch-hit two-run double in the top of the sixth which gave San Francisco a 5-3 lead and proved to be the game-winner. That hit was most impressive as it came off a high fastball by a lefty Braves hurler named Dylan Lee. It would cap a four-run sixth inning that put the Giants ahead 6-4. Earlier in the inning

Cox, a 24-year-old outfielder who debuted on May 31, went 2-for-5 with two RBIs. Cox singled on a bunt to tie the game at 2-2 in the top of the fifth and hit a solo homer in the top of the ninth. It was his fourth of the season. As impressive as the homer to left was, the bunt was an even more impressive display of baseballing as the bunt was pushed between the pitcher and Braves first baseman Matt Olson in the aforementioned sixth inning.

Osleives Basabe also homered for the Giants while Eldridge hat two hits and a run driven in.

The winning pitcher for the Giants was starter Anthony Molina who went five innings and allowed six hits and three runs and did not walk a batter while striking out six Braves batters. It was his second win of the season.

The Giants travel to Pittsburgh to play the Pirates tonight at 6:40 PM. Logan Webb (8-8, 3.72 ERA) faces Paul Skenes (9-11, 3.79 ERA) in a matchup of aces.
