Greek Giant
With the Bums losing yesterday the Giants head into a three-game series with the Cubs with a two and one half game lead atop the National League West. It is pointless to say this game is big or this series is big when there are only 22 games left in the season and you are in the middle of the best pennant race in baseball.
The Giants will be using a relief corps in tonight’s game and I am not happy about it. It will be Dominic Leone on the hill in the first against Kyle Hendricks.
Tomorrow Kevin Gausman will be the starter against Zach Davies. On Sunday it will be TBD against Justin Steel. TBD has a zero era and is a candidate for the CY Young since he is undefeated.
Here is my thought exercise for the day: Let’s say the Giants have a one game playoff for the division and Kevin Gausman, Logan Webb and Anthony Desclafani all pitched within the last three days. It is a win or go home game. Do they still elect to go with a bullpen game? Would they do it for Game 7 of the World Series? If the answer to any of these questions is “No”, and it should be, then this strategy is flawed. I have already written why.
The Cubs, after pretty much throwing in the towel at the trade deadline went into a predictable losing streak then they woke up and have won eight of their last ten going into this game.
Five Questions
- Who will pitch the most innings tonight for the Giants?
- What position will Kris Bryant play in his return to Chicago?
- Who will bat clean up tonight against Kyle Hendricks?
- How many games will it take to win the division?
- How many times will Surf Maui refer to himself in the third person tonight?
