Greek Giant
The Giants begin a three-game set in Pittsburgh tonight with Anthony Desclafani facing off against Will Crowe of the Pirates. The Pirates are simply bad, in one of their “rebuild” years with ownership seemingly abandoning any pretense of competing for the foreseeable future. They are having trouble scoring runs and trouble with their bullpen. The Pirates rank 27th in runs scored and 30th in slugging percentage for all of MLB. Their record at 15-21 puts them at the bottom of the National League Central division and only a handful of games from having the worst record in the NL.
For the Pirates Colin Moran is having a fine start to the season. The first baseman is leading the team with 19 ribeyes. Another important player for the Pirates is one Brian Reynolds who was traded to Pittsburgh as part of the McCutchen deal way back when.
The Giants travel to Cincinnatti for three after the Pittsburgh series. Yes, geographically it may be a stretch to call Pittsburgh a “midwest” city but culturally it really is one, and that’s a compliment coming from me. If you are lucky enough to go to a game in Pittsburgh, have a bite to eat downtown or in the strip then walk across one of the three beautiful bridges to the park. Roberto Clemente Park is one of the best places to watch a game on the planet. It ranks second on my list, after Willie Mays Field.
Five Questions
- Is Logan Webb a rotation mainstay thanks to his last performance?
- Which Giant will lead the team in OPS this year?
- Should BB9 lead off?
- To what do we owe the rejuvenation and impressive play of players like BCraw, BB9 and Buster?
- What former Pirate was the best Giant?
