Waites Could Be Valuable in 2025
After being non-tendered earlier this year, hard-throwing pitching prospect Cole Waites was re-signed by the Giants to a Minor League contract. It was first reported by Sports Illustrated. Here is Marc Delucchi on Waites’s difficult season:
Waites’ 2023 season was derailed by multiple injuries, and it ended in September when he underwent UCL surgery. He was expected to be a key contributor in the Giants bullpen coming into the year (preseason #26 prospect), but ultimately made just three MLB appearances, allowing five runs across 2.1 innings pitched. He also struggled at Triple-A, posting a 6.16 ERA with 27 walks and 32 strikeouts in 30.2 innings pitched (32 appearances).
Waites made his Major League debut last season and was the first player scouted by souting director Mark Holmes to make it to The Show. It is likely Waites will need all of 2024 to recover from his injury. This signing is an insurance policy in a way. The Giants feel he may have something in that right arm when he recovers.
Possible Free Agent Signings
There are some hardcore rumors around the league that the Giants will go all-in for Shohei Ohtani and other free agents. Ohtani has played things close to the vest and his agent is NOT Scott Boras, which bodes well for any club wanting to negotiate with the superstar Japanese player. I hate speculation and BS free agent talk in the offseason. I do like analyses as to why a certain player would be a good addition for a certain team. For the Giants, I don’t see the move happening. They are, as I have said many times before, just too far away from contention for a World Series and Ohtani has made it clear he wants to be a winner on a winning team. There are other very good options still available on the market however. They include Rhys hoskins who is a legitimate Major League hitter, not a pseudo-hitter like others on the Giants.
I think the Giants will also be in on Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and (as much as I hate the thought) Cody Bellinger. I also think the Giants will sign either Marcus Stroman and/or Blake Snell. It will take big bucks but if the Giants snag a solid starting pitcher AND a guy like Hoskins then that could make them a legit postseason contender. If they sign two rotation stalwarts and two everyday players with better track records than the Mitch Hanigers of the world, then we’re talking.
