In an interesting pre-Spring Training move the Giants signed former Cleveland Guardians outfielder Will Brennan to improve their outfield depth, one day before the first full-squad workout in Scottsdale. I say “interesting” because I think this move is a sleeper. Brennan has had some tough injury luck the past two years. The new contract is a one-year Major League deal.

Brennan is  a left-handed-hitting outfielder who spent the last four seasons with Cleveland. The Giants transferred right-hander Rowan Wick to the 60-day injured list to clear a spot for Brennan on the 40-man roster. Brennan, who is 28, batted .264 with a .697 OPS and eight home runs over 114 games with Cleveland in 2024, but he appeared in only six games last year after undergoing season-ending Tommy John surgery on his left elbow in June. He has a career .720 OPS against right-handed pitching and a career OPS of .453 against lefties. Brennan also had sports hernia surgery in September to repair a groin issue, but he’s expected to be “full go” for Spring Training, according to general manager Zack Minasian. Brennan and Gilbert have Minor League options remaining.

If you are keeping score at home you know the Giants now have Heliot Ramos, Harrison Bader, Jung Hoo Lee, Luis Matos, Jerar Encarnacion, Drew Gilbert and non-roster invitee Jared Oliva to go along with Brennan. In other words, the outfield will be a competitive battle all Spring for this 2026 Giants team. No spot is secured.

“There’s been competition in every single place that I’ve been, and I’ve always just had to fight my way onto a roster. My ultimate goal is to help this team win a World Series in whatever that capacity may be — bench spot, play left field, whatever. The ultimate goal is to help the team. That’s what it was when I was in Cleveland, and that’s what it’s going to be here.”
