Yesterday the Giants traded Jorge Soler to the Atlanta Braves along with Luke Jackson in exchange for Tyler Matzek and Sabin Ceballos. The Braves will be taking on the remaining $26 million owed to Soler in 2025 and ‘26. The 32-year-old Cuban slugger was in the first year of a three-year, $42 million deal he signed with the Giants in February. It’s safe to say this was a salary dump for an overpaid and past his prime slugger who did not slug much at Willie Mays Field, particularly with runners on base. The return to Atlanta is an attempt to catch fire and push the Braves deeper into the postseason in light of all their injuries.

Ceballos is the Braves number 17 prospect and a promising third baseman. Matzek, 33, posted a 9.90 ERA over 11 relief appearances for the Braves this year, though he hasn’t pitched since May 4 due to left elbow soreness, making him questionable for the remainder of the season. He has a $5.5 million club option for 2025. It’s safe to say the Giants will likely DFA Matzek if he cannot take Luke Jackson’s place in the bullpen.

The move is also an attempt to get younger and it will likely mean the promotion of Marco Luciano to the DH position, Soler’s spot on the roster. It’s not a bad idea and I think the transaction will be good for the Giants in the long and short term. Let’s see what happens today and tomorrow!

Tonight’s Game
