As my former high school coach, Jack Kokinda, would say “That wasn’t a baseball game. It was an abortion!
Here are the pitches from Tyler Rogers’s outing last night in the bottom of the 9th with the Giants leading 6-5:
ball
ball
ball
ball (leadoff batter in one-run game walks)
ball
ball
ball
ball (second batter in the 9th walks)
Only one of the first eight pitches was close to being a strike.
strike down the middle
ball
three-run homer on a meatball down the middle, game over, tying and winning runs were both walked…
To say it was a rough outing would be perhaps the understatement of the season. To pile on Tyler Rogers for this one bad outing would be a bit unfair since he is having nothing short of a superb season despite blowing five saves so far. The bigger question is why was he closing instead of Jake McGee (who pitched the 8th)? It says here Rogers makes for a fine 7th or 8th inning man but he is not a closer. There is simply less margin for error with a contact pitcher. Rogers is the kind of reliever who relies as much on a weird delivery and a weird motion as he does on stuff. When he cannot find the strike zone and must come in to a batter he becomes basically a batting practice pitcher. The worst part of Mr. Rogers’s outing was that he was nibbling and aiming as if he did not have confidence to challenge the first two batters in the inning.
To be super fair, this loss is on the Giants bullpen as a group. One night after allowing one hit and throwing six shutout innings, the Giants were undone by a horrible outing by Rogers and John Brebbia and turned a 6-1 lead into an 8-6 disaster.
This was the kind of loss that can derail a season in a hurry. With Urias and Buehler going in the next two games at Dodger Stadium, the Giants must win one of two to stay in first place.
The Giants were three outs from taking a three-game lead in the NL West. Oh baseball!!!
All six of the Giants runs were scored via the long ball. Two came from the bat of Alex Dickerson. Yaz hit a two-run dinger and both Thairo Estrada and LaMonte Wade Jr. hit solo bombs to make the night look very promising at one point.
There’s a new Sherfy in town. Former ForeverGiant Jimmie Sherfy got the win!! Just how galling is that!
This game was the first time since 1958 in the Giants vs. Dodgers rivalry that the teams combined to hit seven or more home runs in a game.
Alex Wood pitches six innings allowing only one run despite a bout with erraticismismism..
If you don’t think this is a big series for the Dodgers as well then read this:
“That was huge for us. This is a huge series. We stuck with it and came back and found a way to win a game. That’s our biggest win of the year so far,”
-Chris Taylor
