Greek Giant

Logan Webb and the Giants beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-0 last night in what was for both parties, the most impressive performance of this young season. At one point Webb retired 19 straight DBacks in a dominant effort that saw him induce many ground ball outs and outs on weak contact to go along with his five strike outs in seven shutout innings of work that saw him surrender only two hits and one walk. In fact those two hits came in the first two batters of the game. From there Webb cruised to a performance so dominant that even though it was a pitcher’s duel until the eighth inning with the Giants holding a 1-0 lead, it never felt like the Dbacks would threaten with Logan in the game.

The Giants scored their first run on a sacrifice fly by LaMonte Wade Jr in the bottom of the third inning that scored Patrick Bailey. Bailey had doubled earlier in the inning. With Arizona starting pitcher cruising until he was hit by a line five on his pitcher’s arm in the third inning and with his replacement Logan Allen pitching 4 2/3 shutout innings it was a tense and exciting ball game that saw the Giants mount few rallies of any sort until the eighth inning when they broke the game open thanks to a bases-loaded double by Wilmer Flores down the left field line and a two-run single by a previously slumping Yaz. Yaz also made a fine diving catch earlier in the game.
From there it was party time and Ryan Walker retired the DBacks in the ninth inning by pitching a shutout to seal the win.

Bob Melvin agrees, this was the Giants most impressive game of the year so far:

“That’s probably as good a game as we played all year, all the way around. That’s kind of what we’ve been looking for. Now, we have to sustain it. We got some big hits, we got great starting pitching, we got good relief pitching, we played good defense, all of the above.”

Webb’s 19 consecutive outs against the D-backs were a career high for him. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, his previous record was 16 straight against the Rockies in Denver in 2022. Webb lowered his ERA in the process to 2.97. It’s amazing what a dominant start will do for your spirits and your stats early in the year!

Check out the movement on Webb’s fastball!

In fact I would say a key component of Logan’s success on this night was locating the fastball up and also away in the zone, just out of reach of Snake Bats. Webb’s pitchers had some mean movement. Nothing was going in straight to the plate!

Tonight’s Game

The Giants take on Arizona for game two of the series tonight at 7:15PM. It will be Montgomery versus Snell. It should be a very good pitching matchup.
