Greek Giant

Ok, it was just that kind of game. Alex Wood had a bad day (3 1/3 innings, 7 runs) and the Giants were sloppy on the field missing double plays, as Anthony Rendon, the former National, came back to haunt our boys in the form of five RBIs in the 8-1 loss to the Angels of Southern Cal. The bigger issue is the slump of Alex Wood, who has now lost his third straight start and seen his ERA go from basically zero to 3.48 in the blink of an eye. It was, by far, Wood’s worst start as a Giant.

For Wood, the issue in the game was command-wildness. He did not get a single swing and miss on his back foot slider, easily his most important pitch. He gave up just four hits but that was enough for a seven spot. He also hit a batter and walked four in his 3 plus innings. Matt Wisler would later give up a three-run double to the aforementioned Rendon to blow the game wide open and that was all she wrote except for an RBI single by Donovan Solano in the bottom of the 7th.

In other bad news, Yaz went down with a thumb strain after slamming into the wall trying to make a catch in the fourth inning. Finger and hand injuries are very difficult to recover from, particularly for hitters. We hope it is not serious. The MRI on Evan Longoria came back negative and the diagnosis is a strain of the mild intercostal variety.

Roster Moves

The Giants made a few roster moves in the past 24 hours.

The Casali injury will hurt the Giants pitching staff. Take my word for it.

Saturday Pride, Giants Style

Yesterday the Giants announced that on Saturday they will wear a pride patch on their right sleeves and the rainbow colors (the semi-official symbol of Gay pride) on their caps. They will be the first Major League team to do so. Giants Gabe Kapler voiced his approval by saying “We are very proud of being apart of it. Looking forward to the impact and the support that we can provide for the LGBTQ community.”
