It’s called “Quantrill” as in Cal Quantrill, The Cleveland Guardians starter, he of the ERA in the mid 5s who shut down the Giants last night allowing only one run in six innings of work at Willie Mays Field. He was the difference-maker in the 3-1 loss to the Guardians. Blake Sabol hit a home run. And that was it for the Giants on offense.
A LaMonte Wade Jr. error lead to two unearned runs. Otherwise Sean Manaea pitched quite well in his 5 2/3 innings of work, a game in which he started and allowed only two hits. At one point he retired fifteen straight Guardians. He did his job. Only one of the three runs he allowed was earned. With the game tied at 1 run in the top of the sixth inning Tyler Freeman singled in two runs. The Giants were shutout after the Sabol solo blast in the bottom of the fifth inning that briefly tied the game.

This was a strange game in many ways. The GIants had a grand total of six hits but only struck out three times. You don’t see that very often in today’s Major League game.
With the loss the four game winning streak is kaput. The Giants record is now 74-71. Since the DBacks lost the Giants are still 1.5 games behind them for the final Wild Card spot and they control their own destiny since they play Arizona for a couple games before the season ends.
Injury News
J. D. Davis sat out last night’s game with a lower back issue and Patrick Bailey is expected to return to action today after time off because of a concussion.
Today’s Game
The finale, and rubber game of the three game series against the Cleveland Guardians takes place today at 12:45 PM at Willie Mays Field. Kyle Harrison starts for the Giants. It will be Logan Allen taking the mound for Cleveland. This is a huuuuuuuuuge game for the Giants.
