The Future Shortstop

The sad days of winter and no baseball are upon us, Giants fans. Today I will write a bit about some offseason news that may interest you and may be part of the Giants plan for 2025. Let’s begin with shortstop. MLB.com is reporting that Buster Posey is at the winter meetings in San Antonio recently. In fact, when asked about the future of shortstop for the Giants Posey hinted that Tyler Fitzgerald may play other positions and that Marco Luciano may be tailored to play in the outfield since his shortstop experiment last year was utterly disastrous. Here is the full quote:

“If we could find a shortstop, that’d be great. I think Tyler Fitzgerald did a great job at short last year. I think he has value in multiple spots on the field. I do think it’s hard to play multiple spots at the same time during the season. Whether he’d be better suited to play second base long term is a discussion we’re having.”

-Buster Posey

Now, among free agents Willy Adames, formerly of the Brewers, is the top prize at short, with Ha Seong Kim, the former San Diego Padre, being coveted as well. Adames is represented by Posey’s former agency while Kim is represented by Scott Boras, who is off and running in the rhetoric department, praising his clients.

Giants Lose an Executive

It was reported that there was a recent departure from the Giants front office. Director of baseball analytics Michael Schwartze left to join the Braves, reuniting with former Giants general manager Pete Putila. Schwartze had been with the Giants since 2018 and was a fixture in the clubhouse in recent years. Posey said Paul Bien, the club’s vice president of baseball analytics, will lead the search for Schwartze’s replacement.

Could Blake Snell Return to the Giants?

No. But, I need to fill this post with something. Snell opted out, as we all know, of his final year of the Giants contract and decided to become a free agent after a strong second half of the season but one that saw him decide to not pitch certain innings and not pitch certain games. It’s fair to say that Snell is not the kind of Giant Buster Posey or I want wearing the proud orange and black. His selfish behaviour, starting with him reporting to Spring Training out of shape and not ready to pitch, is unacceptable and not part of the Giants’ way. Full STOP!

Matt Chapman, Silver Slugger Finalist

Recently MLB announced the finalists for the 2024 Silver Slugger Award. Matt Chapman was named a finalist for his strong season at third base for the San Franciscans. Manny Machado and Alec Bohm are the other two finalists in the National League. I except Manny to win it.
