Greek Giant
For the second straight game the Giants were undone by Mariner home runs in their 6-3 loss yesterday in Seattle. It was a disappointing end to a series that begin so promisingly for the San Franciscans with their 7-0 win on Friday. On Saturday it was a huge three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning by Cole Young off Logan Webb that erased a 3-0 Giants lead in a game Seattle would win 4-3.
Yesterday, after taking leads of 2-0 in the first inning and 3-2 in the top of the fifth inning the Mariners responded with home runs by Young and a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning by Luke Raley that made the difference in the game. It’s a shame because things started so well for the Giants with Bryce Eldridge’s tenth homer in the first inning and Heliot Ramos’s two-out RBI single to give the orange and black a quick 2-0 lead. Robbie Ray had a Robbie Ray weird game, which is to say he pitched four innings and allowed only one earned run against seven hits with six strikeouts. The problem was the 86 pitches, far too many in four innings, the two unearned runs and the two walks. Seven hits in that span is also far too high to expect a win.
Adrian Houser took the loss with three innings of relief work beginning in the bottom of the sixth inning. He allowed four hits and three runs including the big Raley long ball.
Casey Schmitt had two errors in the game. If you want to know another part of this game’s story: the Giants had five hits and struck out 16 times against Gilbert, the starting pitcher, Bazardo, Speier, and Munoz, the three relievers.
In short this was kind of a microcosm of the Giants weaknesses: Shaky starting pitching, terrible bullpen, inconsistent hitting and defense. The Giants are now 42-57 and still on a straight path to 100 losses, an incredible stat.
Tonight’s Game
The Giants travel to play the Royals in Kansas City with Trevor McDonald (3-7, 5.02 ERA) facing Michael Wacha (5-7, 3.77 ERA) in the starting pitching matchup.
