Greek Giant
The Giants begin a three-game series with the Rockies at Willie Mays Field tonight. As we saw with the series against the Astros, rebuilding is a bitch. Be careful what you ask for, Giants fans. Yes, we all wanted a rebuild. Yes, we all wanted the youngsters to play and the veterans to be shipped off. Well, that’s kind of happening and we are witnessing the painful realities of a rebuild with young pitchers blowing leads and rookies making disastrous plays in the field. It’s ugly and to be perfectly honest, most of these players on the Giants 40-man roster will not be in the Major Leagues for long. That’s the reality we have for now and probably 2027. It’s the right approach, to enrich the Minor Leagues and to develop players from within, but it’s. not easy for us.
The Rockies enter tonight’s game with a record of 48-73, the second-worst record in the Major Leagues. Take a look at the starting pitcher ERAs and you will learn all you need to know about Colorado.
Here are the Pitching matchups:
Tonight at 7:15 PM
Kyle Freeland (3-10, 6.63 ERA) versus Landen Roupp (7-11, 4.22 ERA).
Saturday at 1:05 PM
Michael Lorenzen (3-10, 6.83 ERA) versus Logan Webb (7-7, 3.59 ERA).
Sunday at 1:05 PM
Gabriel Hughes (0-4, 5.61 ERA) versus Blade Tidwell (0-0, 2.78 ERA)
Buster Posey Interview
Yesterday, The Athletic and Brittany Ghiroli published an extensive interview with Buster Posey on his role of GM/President of the Giants, his legacy and his current status. It was enlightening at times, awkward at others and a worthwhile read. Did everyone remember that Buster’s contract ends at the end of the 2027 season? Here are a few interesting excerpts:
“You have control over trades or signings or who to release, but it’s very concise,” Posey says. “Maybe there’s a buildup to those decisions, but then they happen in a small moment of time. Then you live with those decisions, and sometimes there’s not anything you can do to rectify it if you want to go back on something.
“Whereas if I make a poor decision on a swing at the plate,” Posey snaps his fingers. “I can change that on the next pitch.”
and
“That’s probably something I underestimated a little bit,” Posey says. “There’s times where if there’s an issue with the clubhouse staff, sometimes that’s gonna make its way up to me. Or if there’s something on a larger scale, it’s gonna make its way to me. It’s certainly more than just baseball decisions.
“I always tell young major leaguers, ‘You have to understand your responsibility now is more than just a baseball player. You’re an ambassador to the game, you’re an ambassador to your team and really to your family as well, and that extends beyond what you do on the field.’ I had that sense as a player, but maybe I didn’t realize the magnitude of it in this role.”
It’s clear to us Giants fans and to rival executives that Buster is a man of great intelligence and talent. It’s also clear that he is learning on the job in his new role as Big Giants Kahuna and the results are mixed. To be fair, the draft choices and the young talent acquired may not blossom until 2029 or later, at which time Posey may be fired, may decide to walk away, or may improve his lot with the Giants putting in a solid 2027 season. It is a strange time for the Giants legend and this season has been, to be sure, a Gigantic test for him and for us all.
