Roupp and Gilbert Deliver Versus DBacks in Bounce-Back Win for Giants

Drew Gilbert is a player to watch. His tools are fascinating: speed, contact, intensity and a certain kind of cockiness for the big moment. He is quietly making a statement in this lost season as the Giants look for young players to develop into quality ballplayers, maybe even stars. In last night’s 6-1 Giants win over the Arizona Diamondbacks, Gilbert lead off the bottom of the first inning with a first pitch homer to deep right on a high curveball off starting pitcher Jose Cabrera.

That gave the Giants a 1-0 lead. After Arizona tied the game at 1 on a homer in the top of the fourth inning, Gilbert drove in the second Giants run of the game on a sacrifice line out to left. That came in the bottom of the fifth in a pitcher’s duel that saw Landen Roupp go five innings and allow one run on four hits and two walks. He danced around trouble in the top of the fifth inning when the bases were loaded with one out but induced two pop-ups to escape. In the process he earned his eighth win of the season against 13 losses. It was a good start for a pitcher the Giants were counting on for a better season this year.

The Giants broke the game open with four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning off the DBacks bullpen. Eldridge doubled in a run with a rocket down the left field line. Cox and Hill hit run-scoring singles and the Giants added their sixth run courtesy of safety squeeze that the Dbacks pitcher misplayed into a fielder’s choice. He could have thrown home to record the out but had a brain spasm and went to first. It did not matter in the end as Ryan Walker closed out the game and Carson Seymour pitched a scoreless inning in relief as well.

The win was a big recovery after the debacle of Wednesday’s loss to the Reds. Manager Tony Vitello, in his own unique usage of the English Language, had this to say about the Giants victory:

“You could throw tomatoes at our record. or say a playoff win would be better, [winning] Opening Day would have been better. But if you’re just talking about the circumstances from yesterday, how we’ve struggled this year bouncing back appropriately … You wrap it all into one and it stacks right up there.”
