The Giants are now 3-5 in the Cactus League for 2023 and we all know the records do not matter. Today the boys are scheduled to play the Reds at 3:05 PM at Goodyear Ballpark. The Giants were off yesterday.

Brett Wisely

Brett Wisely, picked up in a trade with the Rays who had a roster crunch, is having a good Spring. MLB.com has a nice story about him. He, along with Diaz is going to get plenty of opportunities to make the Big League roster for the role as backup to Brandon Crawford at shortstop. He is 3-10 so far at the plate. Here is what Maria Guardado says about him:

With an infield mix that skews right-handed, the Giants are expected to give Wisely and Isan Díaz — two left-handed-hitting middle infielders who were added to the 40-man roster over the offseason — early opportunities to contribute at the big league level this season. Wisely has drawn most of his starts at shortstop this spring, giving the club much-needed depth behind 36-year-old Brandon Crawford, but he isn’t taking his new situation for granted.

Wisely is listed in the article on 30 prospects turning heads this Spring. That’s an interesting read too.

Roster Cuts and Reassignments

On Sunday the Giants announced Minor League reassignments from Spring Training camp. RHP Randy Rodríguez optioned; 11 non-roster invitees reassigned to Minor League camp. The most notable player included in the Giants’ first round of cuts was Rodríguez, a 23-year-old right-hander who posted a scoreless inning against the Guardians in his lone Cactus League appearance on March 2. The Giants also sent out catchers Brett Cumberland and Andy Thomas; left-handers Sean Newcomb, Darien Núñez and Daniel Tillo; right-handers Ljay Newsome, Joe Ross and Drew Strotman; and infielders Donovan Walton, Colton Welker and Brady Whalen. Sixty-six players remain in big league camp, including 27 non-roster invitees.
