Greek Giant
The Giants beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 7-6 in Cactus League action yesterday. Austin Slater drove in four runs, three with a double. Delaplane was the winner. J. D. Davis hit a three-run home run. Let’ hope he gets at least 400 at bats. I see him hitting 30 homers this year, if he stays healthy.

The Giants are now 7-11 in the Cactus League.
Injury News
The Giants also recently announced that Brandon Crawford is having issues with his left knee, the same knee that kept him out of action last year. He will be resting for a few days and will presumably be in the starting line up on Opening Day. Gabe Kapler has spoke openly about managing Crawford’s workload the same way the Giants were hands on about Buster Posey’s play time in 2021. If the knee becomes a big problem the Giants have both Casey Schmitt and Thairo Estrada to play at shortstop, depending on matchups and what happens at second base. Third base should be David Villar’s position this year.
Mitch Haniger was also shut down with what was described as an “oblique strain.” Obliques are very tricky injuries and the Giants have said that Haniger’s is not sever. We shall see. The rest should do the trick in time for Opening Day.
Here is a quote by Haniger about the injury:
“I was kind of shocked that there was even a strain. It just felt really tight. It didn’t feel like I had any damage, per se, but when I’ve done it in the past, it would hurt. Rolling out of bed, getting into a car, stuff like that. I don’t feel anything like that. As far as daily movements, I feel really good. Obviously, if I tried to swing today, I’d probably feel it. But I’m pretty optimistic.
“My goal is to be back as fast as possible. I feel confident that I’ll be back before Opening Day, but at the same time, we’ve just got to make sure we listen to my body, listen to the trainers, and do it right so that this doesn’t come back up.”
Luis Gonzalez had back surgery yesterday to repair a herniated disc. If the surgery is a success and rehabilitation goes well then Gonzalez could be back for the second half of the season.
Roster Moves
Kyle Harrison was reassigned to AAA Sacramento, in a move that disappoints me but may be due to a temporary roster crunch. I expect Harrison be in the starting rotation in San Francisco by May, if not sooner. The Giants may deal or demote one of the many starters on the current forty man rotation. Keaton Winn, Tristan Beck and Isan Diaz were optioned as well.
