Verlander!
Bob Melvin described Justin Verlander’s impact on the team in Spring Training during an informal presser two days ago. The words he used were “Impact and Leadership” and they are exactly what you hope to hear from the Giant Manager when it comes to Verlander’s influence on a Giants team that is an interesting combination of very young and veteran. Verlander will make an impact for the Giants on the field, I believe. No doubt he is on the tail end of a Hall of Fame career. It will be interesting to see how many wins he has left in that magical right arm of his. You can see the video of Melvin’s interview here.

The Curse of Joey Bart Continues
Backup catcher Tom Murphy is not in camp five days and already has a bad back. This is not good, folks. The pain is caused by spasms and an MRI will follow. Oh man, shipping Joey Bart off to the Pirates was one of Zaidi’s worst moves and the Giants are still paying for it. The tandem of Bailey and Bart would have worked so well with Buster as the GM!
Marco Luciano, Outfielder?
The Giants are trying to give Marco Luciano a shot at making the team as an outfielder. It’s a big move from shortstop and an admission that his days as a prospect at short are officially over after a rough 2024 campaign and exceptionally poor management of his growth and development by the previous Giants administration. Luciano arrived at Scottsdale Stadium on Friday with his infield gloves still in tow, but the Giants expect most of his reps to come in the corner outfield this spring. Luciano will have a chance to compete with fellow youngsters like Luis Matos, Grant McCray and Wade Meckler for the fourth outfield spot, though Matos is viewed as the front-runner for the role after winning Rookie of the Year honors in the Venezuelan Winter League.
