Greek Giant
Daniel Susac, the forgotten man in the Giants catching rotation, hit his first two Major League home runs in his career and the Giants romped to a 16-3 win over the Milwaukee Brewers. Logan Webb earned his fifth win of the year against seven losses. The Giant catcher got the scoring started for the San Franciscans thanks to his three-run shot off Brewers left-hander Thomas Pannone in the bottom of the second inning, smashing a low changeup over the center-field fence to the delight of the Giants and their fans.
“I knew it was going to come eventually,” said Susac, who entered Wednesday mired in a 4-for-36 (.111) slump over his last 16 games. “It was just putting in the work with [hitting coaches Oscar Bernard] and Hunter [Mense] in the cage. I’m trying to get back to the swing that I feel like I came into this year with. It’s just been a grind. I’ll keep trying to stay on it.”
The Milwaukeeans made things interesting with single runs on ground outs in the top of the fourth and fifth innings. But the Giants put the game out of reach with a magical, dazzling, spectacular bottom of the sixth inning in which they scored seven runs. It all started with a hit batsman to Willy Adames and walks to Daniel Susac and Jesus Rodriguez following a steal of second base by Adames. Then Christian Koss singled in a run before Arraez singled in two more. That made the score 6-2 before Ramos singled in two runs and Devers drove in a run on a fielder’s choice. Jung Hoo Lee then doubled in two runs. It was not exactly power ball but the Giants situational hitting, aggressiveness and singles did the job to make the game 10-2.
Arraez would end the day with four hits.
The Giants would end up with 17 hits of Brewers pitching, with the bulk of the damaging coming off.. well, everybody. The Brewers’ pitchers line for this game was ugly: Penon, Patrick, Ashby, Wilson, and Vaugh each gave up at least two earned runs with Ashby surrendering four.
The Giants would tack on and Logan Webb would end up pitching six innings and allowing only four hits. Hentges, Killian and Winn pitched the seventh, eighth and ninth respectively with a lone run being charged to Hentges to make this a decisive series win against the team with the best record in the Major Leagues. The Giants are one of the bottom teams of the League and of course, they win the series. Baseball is weird.
