In the Giants loss to the Pirates last night in Pittsburgh by a score of 13-12 many strange things happened. Here is a bullet list:
- Giants Ace Logan Webb gave up nine runs in his two innings of work
- Paul Skenes, Pirate Ace, gave up five runs in 4 2/3 innings against a Giants line up that can be charitably described as “Rafael Devers and pray for rain”
- The two teams combined for 23 runners left on base (11 for the San Franciscans, 12 for the Pittsburghers)
- Turner Hill went 4-5 and became only the third player to get four hits off Paul Skenes in one game
- Osleivs Basabe’s throwing error with two outs in the bottom of the ninth scored the winning run.
- The Giants rallied to tie the game after trailing 12-7 with five runs in the top of the eighth inning
- There were 35 hits in the game with 15 from the Giants and 19 from the Pirates
- The bottom of the third inning was one of the worst in Giants history with Webb and Roxby combining to give up nine runs
There’s much more to this game including Rafael Devers’s 31st homer, a three-run shot to deep center in the top of the second inning. It was a bomb. It was part of a five-run frame the Giants put together after Webb had a rough bottom of the first, giving up two runs.
Raise your hand if you expected a 13-12 game with Logan Webb facing Paul Skenes!
“I was excited to face Paul. I’ve become pretty good friends with him. I wanted to compete against him today, and I didn’t do a very good job of that. Worst start of my career. Not good.”
See what I mean? This was a very weird game. It seems every year something weird happens between the Pirates and the Giants at Roberto Clemente Field.
Giants Sign Darren Baker
Darren Baker, a 27-year-old second baseman, will reportedly join Triple-A Sacramento, which could put him in the mix for a September callup with the club that his father managed for 10 seasons from 1993-2002.
The Giants have infused their farm system with famous bloodlines this year. They selected outfielder Peyton Bonds, the nephew of legendary slugger Barry Bonds, in the third round of the 2026 MLB Draft in July. A few weeks later, they acquired infielder Kaeden Kent, the son of Hall of Famer Jeff Kent, from the Yankees as part of the Heliot Ramos trade.
Marte Makes Jump from AA to The Show!
After losing two starters — Carson Whisenhunt and Adrian Houser — to the injured list earlier this week, the Giants found themselves extremely pressed for pitching depth ahead of Saturday’s doubleheader against the D-backs at Oracle Park.
Given their dearth of options, the club decided to take the rare step of promoting right-hander Yunior Marte directly from Double-A Richmond to the Majors. The 23-year-old — the organization’s No. 24 prospect per MLB Pipeline — was officially called up to start Game 2 on Saturday and delivered a solid performance in his MLB debut, giving up one run over 4 2/3 innings in a 7-2 victory for the Giants.
Acquired from the Royals in exchange for outfielder Mike Yastrzemski last year, Marte logged a 3.85 ERA in 22 appearances (20 starts) between High-A Eugene and Richmond before earning his callup on Saturday. The 6-foot-6 hurler experienced an unforgettable moment even before he stepped onto the mound, as he got to meet Hall of Famer Juan Marichal, who was in town for Jeff Kent’s jersey number retirement ceremony.

The Giants made a few roster moves yesterday in response to injuries and to shore up their Minor League teams that have seen many promotions of late.
