Greek Giant
The most disappointing aspect of this weekend’s double thrashing of the Giants was the let-down after the splendid win on Friday night. Let’s begin with a few numbers, because, as we all know, they don’t lie and they cannot be spun by homeboy Giants journalists on the take:
- The Giants got out-hit by the Dodgers on Saturday and Sunday 35-13, an almost unbelievable stat line
- The Giants allowed 23 runs in their last two losses to the Dodgers this weekend, with their top starters on the hill!
- In their starts Aces Logan Webb and Robbie Ray gave up six runs and five runs, respectively, while going only four innings
- Michael Conforto drove in four runs and had huge hits, the same guy the Giants jettisoned because, well, he was not hitting anymore
- The Giants struck out 16 times, 12 coming in yesterday’s game
- The Giants are a combined 6-16 against the Dodgers (3-6) and Padres (3-10) this season
- The Giants now have a record of 75-74 after yesterday’s loss
“To be where we are today is disappointing. It got away from us in a hurry. We gave up a lot of hits and a lot of runs to a team that makes you work. If you don’t throw it over the plate, they end up wearing you out some.”
Webb and Ray’s short starts means the Giants will embark on their final road trip of the regular season — a seven-game NL West swing through Arizona and Los Angeles — with a bullpen that’s already been forced to cover a combined 10 innings over the last two days. In other words, the Giants are in trouble. In their last ten games they are 5-5 and I guess we can say the hot streak is officially over.
The most glaring number from the ones I cited is the 6-16 mark the Giants have against the top two teams in their division. It is disheartening and a statement on their position going forward. If the Giants want to contend for the National League West division they will have to be more competitive against the likes of San Diego and Los Angeles. That 6-16 mark is no fluke, with most of the losses being terribly one-sided.
The loss of Dominic Smith for the season with his hamstring injury certainly does not help matters. He strained it on the key play in Friday night’s win that helped preserve a tie game at the time. Wilmer Flores is expected to take over at first base the rest of the way.
The Giants are still in the postseason hunt and I guess you can say it is a silver lining. I really don’t want to write much about yesterday’s 10-2 loss other than to say Bob Melvin’s decision to play the infield in on the Conforto at bat hurt but this loss is not on him. The Giants were just out-played and out-talented by the Dodgers, as happens regularly this season. That those last two losses were so ugly and came at home hurts but, today is another day.
Tonight’s Game
It will be Teng versus Gallen in Phoenix tonight at 6:40 PM as the Giants begin a series against the Diamondbacks.
