Carson Whisenhunt overcame early struggles and lots of traffic on the bases to pitch 5 2/3 innings and earn his third victory of the season as the Giants beat the Astros, 4-1 at Willie Mays Field last night. The Big lefty needing 55 pitches to get through his first two innings against the Astros on Tuesday night. But after allowing the lone run in the top of the second on a sac fly by Yordan Alavarez, Whisenhunt made the Astros hit into two infield outs to escape the damage of a bases loaded nobody out jam.

For Whisenhunt, who would not allow another run in this stat and who entered Tuesday 0-3 with a 10.80 ERA over his last three starts, it was an impressive, and confidence-boosting game. Whisenhunt uses a very big and effective curveball, a dying breed of pitch in today’s game, with an accurate fastball and a new sinker he is trying to develop as a third pitch. Since Whisenhunt does not have the most overpowering fastball in the Majors, command and a third pitch will be essential to his future success.

The Giants used that escape act as momentum and rallied for a run in the bottom of the second inning on a two-out RBI single by Drew Gilbert, who is playing the best baseball of his career at the moment, and a solo homer to deep, I mean very deep, left center field by Bryce Eldridge in the bottom of the fifth inning after Drew Cavanaugh singled in a run in the bottom of the fourth inning. That gave the Giants a 3-1 lead that they would later add to thanks to a Christian Koss double in the bottom of the fourth inning. Speaking of Koss, he has shown athleticism and has played a largely strong third base as both Scmitt and Chapman are out for the season.

In that single by Gilbert I must mention excellent baserunning by Rafael Devers who hustled to second on a wild pitch and scored on the single with determination and hustle.

In contrast to Monday’s brutal loss, the Giants bullpen held the lead as J. T. Brubaker earned the save with a clean inning. What a difference a day makes!
