Giants starter Carson Whisenhunt was roughed up badly by the Cleveland Guardians last night in their 8-1 thumping of the San Francisco Rivercats. Whisenhunt gave up six earned runs and nine hits in his four innings of work. Of those runs, five came in the first two innings and the ball game was essentially over at that point. While the Guardians are trying to find consistency and contend for a playoff spot with a very strong pitching rotation, the Giants are sending out AAA players with little promise in response, hence the lopsided scores of late.
The lone Giants run came on a Bryce Eldridge home run in the top of the second inning that gave us the short-lived illusion this would be an actual, you know, competitive baseball game.
It wasn’t.
For Whisenhunt, this was a step, a giant step back in his attempt to prove he belongs in the Major Leagues. There have been several insightful and critical comments made during the game yesterday by the TWG faithful regarding Carson’s inability to command pitches and to miss bats. For a defeat like this against a Cleveland team that struggles to score runs, it would seem Whisenhunt’s future is in doubt.
The loss would put the Giants at 51-74. With 46 games left to play the Giants need to go 19-25 or better to avoid losing 100 games for the second time in franchise history. My money is on this team getting to that 100-loss mark and a top draft pick next year. There are no positives to write about in this game, the Eldridge homer, not withstanding.
Tonight’s Game
The Giants called up Tugboat Wilkinson who will make his Major League debut in a start tonight against the Guardians and Parker Messick. Game time is at 6:45 PM.
