Today’s Game: Giants (80-72) Vs Padres (64-88) at Tony Gwynn Park, 7:10 pm
Jeff Samardzija (11-10, 3.97) vs Christian Friedrich (5-10 4.78)
The Lineups

The Giants travel to San Diego in search both a playoff berth and a little revenge. After dominating the Padres to start the season with a 9-0 run, the Padres have come roaring back to take six in a row against the Giants and humiliate them at Willie Mays Field.
It’s time to put the playoff push to rest or to fruition. The Padres are in a rebuilding mode starting many young players for the first time. Jeff Samardzija takes the ball for the boys from San Francisco and is primed to maintain his second half excellence.
Eduardo Nunez leads off and Gorkys Hernandez is in center. No word on Denard Span’s health. Joe Panik is looking to bust out of his slump. There has been much talk around the Giants nation and on this blog about the outfield defense and the effects of age for Hunter Pence, Denard Spence, and Angel Pagan. We shall see what destiny holds for the 2016 season of our “old” outfield. Tonight Gorkys is back.
Let’s talk about Christian Friedrich. The lefty has a WHIP of 1.45 this year and has given up 13 home runs in only 113 innings pitched. The San Diego ballclub, after an offseason that saw them sign many veterans and big names, now sport a team that resembles a AAA club. While appearing to be back in re-building mode, the Giants must work hard to retain their edge against their Padre foes.
Breckeroni agrees with Mavo, this really isn’t over yet.
Appreciate our Mavo’s militant optimism. Tonight it all changes.
Ah, things have been rough, I’d forgotten about his delightful phrase “militant optimism”. You have to be an optimist to follow baseball!
And be a Giants fan since the 60’s.
Brekeroni say, paulie gonna be depressed come Oct. 3.
Papi=Jeter=Cal. Lame retirement ‘tours.’
Sure hope no Gigante ever engages in this puke.
It’s typically East Coast/ Large Market guys that get the overblown marketing tours…
Buster, 2022.
NO FKN’ WAY.
Will Hensley Mullins be back the San Francisco Giants are the only team in baseball that can have this type of horrible hitting and still bring back their third base coach next year
It’s over. No playoffs.
Maikel Franco 3-run HR, Phils take the lead on Mets 6-4. Top 8!!
A story for PJ: “Baseball has generally moved away from slap hitters and toward an emphasis on power above all else.”
http://www.nytimes.com/2016/09/23/sports/baseball/home-run-records-are-in-sight-the-question-is-why.html
Thank you for linking. Real nice read. I wonder if the batch of bats comes from harder wood. Probably not, but leave no stone unturned.
I’d like to read a perspective like that on defensive shifts, which I’m not so keen on.
Probably would say hitters batting 250 against shift and 260 without or something like that.
Tyler Kepner at NYT, had similar article a few weeks ago. HRs seem a mystery.
With Craw on the bench, who captains the infield?
Joe’s in there. Belt doesn’t really seem like the type to me, and Nunez is too new to the team.
Just play good ball, guys.
Lots of youngsters for the Padres, as noted by GG. Dominate, Shark.
Hold that lead, Phillies!
Just checked the box score. Making an appearance (pinch runner) for Philly: former Giant Emmanuel Burriss. Thought he was long gone from MLB.
Somehow putting up his worst numbers ever!
That can’t be!
.119/.196/.190!! It’s “only” through 47 PA, but brother those are some scary numbers through any sample size.
I gotta check baseball reference. That sounds about average for Emmanuel!
He gave us some decent production for a few weeks in 2011, IIRC, after Freddie Sanchez tore up his shoulder. Didn’t last long–Sabean brought in Jeff Keppinger instead.
The shocking thing is that his SLG his higher than his BA.
Shocking would be if it were lower!
I think Burriss could somehow find a way to do that. Like when Bengie managed to have a lower OBP than BA for awhile.
Shark!
Five pitch first inning. Nice. Let’s get on the board, fellas.
So this Friedrich kid looks a bit like Blach on the mound–lefty, high socks, even the way he stands. Funny.
LOL @ Krukow explaining that the HP umpire “takes awhile to warm up to the curve ball.” SMH #TeamRoboUmp
Gotta protect there, Ehire. Very unproductive out.
Why is Adrianza hitting ahead of Panik? Lefty/lefty not enough reason.
Joe’s in the Skipper’s doghouse.
Ugh. Way to build your young player’s confidence, Bochy. Not.
Crawford spent a lot of time hitting 8th, which is a tough spot. Joe did clear the pitcher with that walk.
Yep. They start over next inning. Saw a lot of pitches that inning, too.
but zippo for runs.
Yep. Ehire K changed the entire inning.
There have have been about 6 or 7… Relax on EA…the big guys need to hit. Not the backup shortstop
True that. I’ll leave EA alone. But I can still retch over Gillaspie, right? That seems fair.
Fair!
Nice job, Boris. (Gracias, Mateo!)
1 for 31
Well, Ehire is out hitting Panik by a fair margin this season….
Do you have a sample of that small size?
Panik is 1 for his last 30 something…I like Joe, but people focusing on Ehire is silly. He’s in there because Craw is hurt…way too much focus on the 25th guy
Come on Shark, help yourself
We’ll take a run thrown in, too!
Bunt!
oops, lost track of the outs!
Might have been a more productive effort anyway.
Even tho this is a crucial game tonight, i wonder if we are going to get the lethargic Giants or the animated Giants tonight?
Can’t have any lethargic the rest of the way.
not good Mets 6 to 6
Netflix for me. Lost in Space.
UN REAL>>>.Mets tie it on a 2 run hr
I wonder what that would be like, to have your team do that in the ninth inning. Sounds exciting and satisfying for the fans!
That’s what power does, The Cards and the Mets, #1 and #2 in NL in HRs
You’d think they were wayyyyy better than the Giants with all those home runs, but they’ve all got about the same record.
Making excuses for slap hitting team .
No PJ, expressing his opinion. There many ways to score runs, one of which is to hit HRs
Actually the Mets and Cards need the excuses. They are hitting all those homers and are pathetic just like the Giants. Did you see what happened to the Mets this week? They lost 3 straight at home to the Braves. THE BRAVES!!
Mets are 29th in runs scored.
THIS IS SERIOUS! PAY ATTENTION! LOSER!
They have the power to come back, they hit for a low average, Giants hit for high average but rarely come back.
And tied in the Wild Card with the team with the least….that’s what pitching and defense do for you
Not when you get behind, and in the 2nd half the Giants are last in runs scored .
I like home runs, too, Peter…but not JUST home runs
Good thing they play more than a “second half”
PJ’s a traditionalist. They didn’t play halves when he was a kid!
Ugh! I was just gonna look!
HOLY CRAP DID YOU SEE THAT CATCH BY GORKYS???
(He looked like an ML CFer.)
Did they get that kid his baseball?
So the PCL is not a good league for pitchers? Blach had a very good year (maybe somebody has the numbers). All the more reason he should have been given a start.
Why yes. I can answer that. The PCL has several awful Coors-seque ballparks–Albuquerque, Salt Lake, Reno. All places where ERAs go to die.
Blach ended up with a 3.43 ERA this year, which was sixth in the PCL. He also led the league in wins with 14, in innings (for the second year in a row), and was third in WHIP. He had an excellent year, and one of his best starts of the year was in Albuquerque, which made more sense when I found out he grew up in Denver.
I knew you’d come through! 😊
Blach’s one of my LeftyGuys™. Pulling hard for him. I’ve loved watching him in Sacramento. He’s been a mainstay for the River Cats the two years they’ve been the Giants’ affiliate, and he’s quite popular there.
I like him a lot as well. I knew you’d have a special left-handed place in your heart for him.
Hawesome.
Why don’t they, or maybe the do, have park factors for minor league fields.
They have wRC+ for minor leaguers, so they must have some kind of park factors. I’m not sure where the park factors themselves would be published though.
Did they announce that he wouldn’t?
We riffed on this a couple days ago. He could have started against the Braves at AT&T in late August, and perhaps elsewhere too.
One or two less Cain/Peavy starts would also have been good.
I didn’t read closely enough. I thought it was a reference to Cueto’s upcoming missed start.
No, I was looking back.
Dead Head sticker on a Cadillac, Brother….
No. Still up in the air as of the pregame presser. Could be Cain, Peavy or Blach. Could even still be Cueto.
Shark: 19 pitches through 2 innings, on pace for an 86-pitch CG.
Wife beater Reyes with the two-run jack to tie it for the Mets.
Those Cold Hard Facts were Freaky.
AND they mirror the season.
The Phillies are such a bad team with a terrible closer. That was his SIXTH blown save this year! No wonder they’re a lottery team.
That’s way better than the Giants!
Really? Huh. Hadn’t noticed. 🙂
Only 6? Sign him. 🙂
Was it Jeanmar Gomez? I didn’t think so and wondered why not.
It was Gomez who gave up the HR.
Hard to be excited for Postseason baseball when your team looks so underwhelming against September call-ups
You’d think that was the bottom of the order the way they got handled so easily by yet another Cy Young candidate that inning.
Why does Angel always look into his glove with surprise when he catches a fly ball? :o?
You answered your own question , I do believe!
Morse would do the same thing! Remember when his face would look so happy after checking his glove and seeing a ball?
That’s because he expecting to find an Easter egg!
For 2 games Posey looked like good Posey, now he is back to bad Posey, and Pence looked good for 2 weeks, now he is bad Pence again, the Giants have no chance if those 2 do not hit .
True…and need Belt and Crawford to have steady contributions…Craw needs to be OK
This game has the makings of a Padres no hitter against the Giants. But somehow the Giants win 1-0.
Don’t they have to get 1 before you can say that?
To late. Giants won’t be no hit but still win.
And we have contact.
The Padres have never had a no-hitter in their franchise history, but as we well remember, they’ve been no-hit a few times.
Those don’t count, I heard.
Timmy Joe, 2014, 2015…
Durty Sanchez, 2009
2013-2014
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BYF8IntUFZI
Good hit. Lucky throw.
Thanks for that terrible throw!
Jon Miller quit
Where is Kuiper? Krukow’s doing the PxP.
Miller switched..mic was broke
Tx
That was weird. Krukow doing double work.
No need for homeruns here. Just get the run in.
This team puts me in a coma.
Well, at least this game is on pace to end before 10.
Don’t count on it.
I was just thinking that. If we’re going to have desultory offense, at least the game is moving along quickly.
Sit down.
Hay-zoos. It’s too bad the Pads have a hit. Smarge is lights-out.
I really thought both teams were gonna get no hit tonight but somehow the Giants pull it off 1-0. A toilet bowl type of game, if you will.
Los Gigantes are gonna win this game.
Book it, Greek.
Zzzzzzz
Marge with the Triple Sitter inning
THAT WAS A FKN PITCH!!!
When he was good…
My oh my the 3rd strike to Shrimp was a thing of beauty.
Samardzija’s filthy today.
Smarge pitching like he has a plane to catch!
So when was Marge’s last complete game?
June in Tampa Bay, 1 run. Only CG this year.
Thanks!
I am totally remembering that game now. Forgot it was a CG.
A J Ellis puts phils up 7-6…
Was 1st and 3rd 2 outs.
Rox up 3-1 T4.
SO
You need anger management classes. Or, maybe a broken caps lock
The Division is over.
SO
Then I do not care about Dodgers scores, it’s Wild Card or nothing .
That’s fine, and I’m with you…just be a bit more social in your original response
Phillies 7-6 T11.
Hope it holds
It’s now 8-6 T11.
If the Dodgers lose 8 straight and the Giants win 8 straight, the Giants would be up two games with two to play.
That’s why the Dodgers started Anderson tonight , they are so worried about the Giants .
They’ll live to regret that. You watch.
I thought the SEASON was over.
No, he was referring to his constant habit of Striking Out as a fan.
Com’on Joltin Joe Jr. Com’on.
You scooped John Miller!
If Duffy was around, Panik would be getting hits. 😉
Being a cheer leader
Clearly they didn’t have a chance to facetime before the game.
Cards didn’t lose today.
Panik needs to sit and get his mind and back together. Play Kelby.
Kelby was not hitting either lately .
Kelby got Kershawed. It happens to a lot of people.
Bochy said Joe’s playing because with Crawford out, he wanted a steadier glove in the infield.
No. He’s our 2B.
Well…he’s 0-24. He needs to sit a couple games and come in for defense.
Back in for D? He ain’t no AD dammit.
That fook played in EL PASO?!?
For the Chihuahuas!
OK – I’m quite ancient – but IRRC, the Giants had an MiLB franchise in El Paso in the mid-60’s that hit .310 AS A TEAM. Jim Ray Hart and some Alou Bros. were on that team.
I recall the early 70’s when the Angels were there: El Paso Diablos
Now they’re devil dogs (photo) https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/28fa4724a745ddbd5a015050b4d3ce4606207538c8104f404dc6bd5d0462d1fe.png
Scary
Chihuahuas are the worst.
Tacoma maybe.
Nope – El Paso.
“Out in the West Texas town of El Paso,
I fell in love with a Mexican girl.
Night times I’d see her at Giants Farm team games,
I’d buy her cerveza and two cha cha bowls….”
Apologies to Marty Robbins. And all the citizens of El Paso.
Great cowboy record St.! We had it when I was a kid.
Is that the same league that Casilla played for La Balka?
Right now, this team can keep talking about making playoffs, saying their goal is still to win a WS but until they show that on the field, I’m not buying it. Just not seeing any kind of drive.
It’s kind of a shame. Our starting pitching has been pretty good.
Scoring runs is helpful, on this blog sometimes people forget .
Yeah, most of the bullpen failures were pitchers trying to “save” a game in which the SFGs only had one or two runs. That’s like trying to save for retirement with Thrifty Green Stamps.
I forget which one, one of the classic blues guys made a great record called “Ain’t Enough Comin In.” Somebody help me out with that, how bout a link. PJ, Buehler, anyone? Ok more like Channel, Ryan or Sincerely. Anyone?
No, he played in E. Europe — in the Balkin League
In 2016, the term “he got Cained” has been updated. It is now simply referred to as “He got startered.”
But you don’t have to be peaved about it.
Dang, now I’m bummed
Miller…don’t scare me…”Mets have scored again”
It was the Phillies. Don’t do that, gnome
The Phillies and Braves must feel bad for the Giants. Problem is the Giants refuse to help themselves. Although understandably Friedrich is basically Kershaw in a Padres uni.
Even if this year goes down in flames I really like what I’ve seen from Samardzija. He’s really developing into what the Giants paid for.
So, now that TNF is over I’ve to watch another lack of off production from this team. SMH
Captain Happy! We missed you
Oh please, I can say that you’re ecstatic
Like a fat kid loves cake
Correct
Somebody’s making you?
Yes, my masochistic side.
Giants, I implore you — do NOT waste another great pitching performance
I agree. But apparently it’s what they do.
Thank you George. Another good write up. Good schtuff. Hi y’all.
Duffman!
Pagan has lots of words, but no hits.
His babbling average is over .500
Angel’s dialed in
Bochys dialed in.
ATTA BABE ANGEL. BEEF IT! meat.
Posey’s dialed in
Posey is having a terrible year.
The worse full year of his Career .
Can anyone on this team hit? My God…just disgusting.
Unbelievable.
This effort so far is absolutely pathetic. This is not the effort of a team fighting for a playoff spot. 6 pitch inning, what an embarrassment
PLAYOFFS! PLAYOFFS! Jim Mora said
Effort is irrelevant when you don’t have the talent or youth.
They are all dialed in!!
Is Mac dead?
He looked that way on Tuesday night.
The dude hasn’t played since the Carter administration. So you can’t blame him.
I’m just teasing. I’m a big Mac fan, but Bochy has screwed with him so bad that’s his mindset at the plate is 6 run HR every time up and it’s showing
that’s the memo Boch received.
If baseball wants to boost the offense, automating balls and strikes would probably help. It seems like far more balls are called strikes than the other way around.
….or contract the Giants
Relegation!
Aston Villa Giants
Mets just won on a 3-run HR. Giants have no excuse for losing this one
Los Gigantes are not going to lose this one. It’ll just take a bit of time. Lucita say so.
https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/e01413ab39bd003b0ab9955d77f228d0410ec0981499d4d9d74262ee571448a8.jpg
Kitty!!
Wow. The Phillies blew a 2 run 9th inning lead and a 2 run 11th inning lead. But if the Giants are relying on the Phillies they’re dead anywayz
Zackly.
Like I said earlier, that’s what power does, only a great catch prevented them from winning last nights game with a 3 run HR .
Coming from behind wins in late innings, something the Giants haven’t done in a long time.
Not since 2015!
So if winning in the bottom of the inning energizes your team, does blowing saves in the bottom of the inning de-energize you? The evidence says yes.
Especially if it happens over and over. It happens occasionally to every team. But it was unbearable to watch as fans. I cannot even imagine as team mates.
Do you look to you like they really care? Do you see them doing anything that might make a Difference? The Padres could line up 7 fielders on the fence and the Giants wouldn’t bunt for a hit. They could put 7 guys on the right field line and Belt would hit into it. They’re rolling over against a guy the Padres dont event want to be pitching.
thanks a lot, phillies. not.
Thanks a lot Marge, you had time. STFU Kruk, he had a lot of time.
You come in late and jump on the Boys. Nice.
Yes, I was watching TNF
Sunshine, Marge has been lights out…don’t show up in the middle of the movie and start yelling
Wow, I guess Mr blog police Matty has shown up. I can do whatever the F I want. You are more than welcome not to respond.
Sunshine! Easy on the road rage, big fella
Coming from you, that’s F’ng rich
True. I am a 1%’er
Let me respond. You do this all the time, and when things get rough, you go to the bowling alley.
That’s absolute BS.
Ok Brownie. I apologize.
This team is just so awful. They don’t deserve to make the playoffs.
They don’t
It blows my mind that we are even talking about it.
My Phillies friend said I should root for them tonight since we were tied with the Mets for the WC. I (half)-jokingly told her she’s assuming I even want the Giants to make the WC so I can watch more suffering.
Until tonight, the Mets hadn’t won a game they trailed after 8 innings–just like the Giants.
So we’re due?
Nope, we’re doo
Well, yeah.
Last night they almost did too .
But all those homers! PJ says they come back because they hit so many homers!
Splendid research.
ugh tomorrow’s a 7:40 game? I might have to take a quick nap after work.
This game is sleep inducing
very true. I stayed home sick today though so I slept in till 11. otherwise I’d probably have dozed off already.
Brownie’s fired up.
Ballgame.
I agree
Its ova
I’m TRYING NOT TO USE CAPS.
Why do you say that, when we’re two batters behind you – and they both STRIKE OUT?
(no kinda fun)
Doesn’t matter. We weren’t gonna score a run anyway.
You guys are ahead of me. I;m way behind.
They just play to lose
No but Bochy plays not to lose, which is often the same thing
Could the Giants even get a hit if they were playing t-ball?
They couldn’t get a hit in a bar full of horny housewives.
Yes.
Oh God! Is this really happening?
Posey has borne no resemblance to a Hall of Famer this season.
That’s why I think there are injuries…
No, I don’t know. No, I’m not making excuses. But he’s too talented to fall off like this
He did too many commercials in the off season , and sleeping in his locker is bad for his back .
That’s funny,PJ. Good stuff…seriously
The best part I think you’re being serious.
That’s enough with the jokes. Baseball is serious business, and I’d appreciate it if you could keep that in mind.
Part of it was serious, too much commercials, not enough strength training .
Are you serious? So what evidence do you have that he didn’t do enough strength training?
I just put a furrowed brow on my face to appear concerned.
Even the best players sometimes have down seasons. It’ll be very interesting to see what happens next year.
Yup….and I do think PJ has a point…spread himself thin in ways
He’s been doing his socks.
No he’s sleep deprived from sleeping in his locker.
I am VERY concerned about him. He has been awful in the second half. He needs a bounce back year next year. Hopefully he’s just dinged up and will be fine next year.
Scratch Lethal Ejection and replace it with Giants Baseball 2016 Second Half Lo Lights and watch crime in the U.S. decrease.
Lol, it’s so funny and sad at the same time because it’s true
Well there won’t be a 3 way tie for the WC after tonight’s game.
Don’t pitch Shrimp inside
Well at least Shark is showing some F’ing heart.
he’s the only one
Gee, Smarge is pitching terrific. Get him some runs dammit
Great pitching doesn’t inspire our hitters.
The movement on Smarge’s stuff tonight is leaps and bounds better than any other start he’s made.
Samardzija’s doing his job.
Tonight’s special : Shark testes.
They have really missed a guy who just went on a tear in the 2nd half and ignited the whole team. Nor Posey, nor Pence, nobody had any really long incredible hitting streaks. Long enough that everyone joined in.
Great Job Samardzja.
Except for the starting pitchers, what Giant hasn’t had a disappointing season ?
Adam Duvall
Eli Manning
He like the Giants has slumped badly in the 2nd half .
Crawford.
His 2nd half has made his season just about average, 60 RBI in 1st half , 20 RBI in 2nd half .
Combined with his defense, he’s had an excellent season.
Roberto Kelly?
Wil Myers just did a curtesy
Somebody earlier today that Bochy was run out of town in San Diego, implying that he was a bad manager because of vet love.
According to baseball reference, San Diego has been to the post season 5 times in 48 years. 4 with Bochy at the helm and none since he left.
He was run out of town in a power struggle with new GM though.
And who won that struggle? The 3 time World Champion, or the the guy who never got his team to the post season?
Giants and Bochy of course. I wasn’t defending the Padres, just pointing out the history.
Who was that guy, anyway?
That’s why he gets a long rope. Bochy is a hall of fame manager and if we get in to the dance. I like our chances.
Baseball is so weird.
That’s only partially right. He WAS run out of town because of “vet love”–the new ownership wanted a different approach. But he certainly wasn’t a bad manager. The Padres were two-time defending division champs when he left.
He did very well in S.D. They were a hurtin’ franchise for decades.
I guess they got what they wanted, didn’t they? And the implication of the commenter earlier was that he was a bad manager.
Darn you and your facts.
Bochy has done such a great job this season.
Just doing my job to keep you off Duvall.
What an utter disgrace this “offense” is
Cy Young on the mound here. 7ip and 86 pitches. Can anyone get another hit, let alone a run?
Well, to be fair, he had 50 or 51 after 3. Which makes it worse!
And Smarge had 27.
Krukow called it a pitchers duel. Isn’t it an incompetence duel?
It is but Stopwatch sez he appreciates a game that moves along smartly.
Smarge vs Cy
Stop using my lines, dude
I just got here.
Besides I though of that line years ago! 🙂
Smarge, riiiighhhtttt!!!
So did he.
Hmm. OK, I won’t mention Cy anymore.
Giants can’t seem to score on Baron von Freidrich. No shocker there.
This truly a pathetic display of hitting by the Giants. Simply embarrassing!!!!!!!
Giants didn’t even give Smarge time to recover from a 20+ pitch inning
The hitting is Vietnam 2011 bad !!!
They’ve gone full Cody Huff.
Mets scored 9 runs tonight. How many runs have the Giants scored in the last 5-6 games?
Mets have a great freaking line up.
I didn’t know there’d be a quiz.
lol I’m asking, I don’t know but you’d have to add up quite a few games to get to 9
Looked it up, 8 in 5 and, wait for it, 16 in 6.
So the Mets scored more tonight than Giants have in the last 5 games. Wow.
Ask Scout about them. He was questioning why they are even still mathematically in the race.
We got this.

I wish it was 2005. 🙁
What for? Snorks was omniscient in 2010 and 2012.
And BTW – his ghost was with us all the way in 2014.
I see lots of zeros
You shouldn’t talk that way about us. Feelings, dude. 🙂
Right?! R-U-D-E
Hope Smarge has a 125+ pitches in him tonight.
He’s gotten hosed almost as bad as Bum with the lack of run support this year.
He’s at 97 pitches. Time for a talk and removal from the game.
Who’s he going to mix it up with after throwing him out at first?
Like I said earlier, our great pitching does not inspire the hitters. And that is simply a shame.
1 hit against Friedrich should be an automatic DQ from postseason
What does getting swept at home by the worst team in baseball get you?
That’s a double with Span out there.
He didn’t even think about trying to stretch that to a double.
Not on a plus arm. No.
This is Notre Dames last inning.
Me four months ago: Samardzija is awesome! What a great signing!
Me two months ago: What a trainwreck. What were they thinking?
Me now: I’m so happy we have Samardzija for four more years after this one!
Together we’re crazy
This season in a nutshell.
It’s not so bad to be bipolar Doc. We have meds.
Posey!!!!!!!!!
Why steal at that time? The runner is a catcher and that saved Smarge from any more pitches. Dumb
Because “Padres”
Esa Neña!
Conor gettin loose!
I see Specs in the on-deck circle.
Ya Conor is only coming in for a RHP. Reaaallllyyy hope I get to see him PH
You better watch out. Pacman says Conor is HIS guy, and Pac’s a jealous type and makes horror movies for a living.
Conor playing baseball is a horror movie in and of itself
Will Smith last 14 appearances: 10 1/3 inninings, three hits (all singles), no runs and 16 Ks.
Closer material
AYUP.
Joe! Welcome back.
Just snapped an 0-24 skid. Wow.
Joltin Joe Jr. Atta babe!
Nicely struck, but it should’ve been an out.
No doubt.
He should be in there for defensive purposes only.
Perhaps. But he’s on third nonetheless.
This team seems so unable to maintain focus. My memory tells me that series following “big series”, such as this post-LA one, they seem so incredibly spent from the prior.
Why are they so spent after a big series? They aren’t new to this whole “baseball season” thing….
They seem to be “spent” every second or third game these days.
I think part of it may be because they keep losing these big series. There is always at least 1 game that they should have won and thus won the series. They look defeated. Almost winning is just that: still losing.
You always want to make excuses. They’re just playing uninspired, bad baseball. They’ve been through the same number of games as everyone else.
Now, how on Earth do you read that as making an excuse?
Please read again. I’m bitterly disappointed in their efforts
“They’re spent” isn’t and excuse? As if there just too tired to get it done. Like when Posey is obviously exhausted every time he slumps.
Dude, wow. Just wow. Shall I edit it so it fits your description of proper criticism levels??? I find this team mentally lethargic…is that better.
They were right this morning…pain in the ass
I think I discovered the Oracle’s real name – it’s Contrary Mary.
That was the most Oracle response of the night.
Unlucky damn bounce
my feed went out. dammit.
Renfroe looks like a potential Giants outfielder.
HA
That was Pagan-esque
Does he have angel hair pasta for an arm?
Finally
Specs!
The Giants ain’t scored yet
Don’t jinx us. That run hasn’t crossed home yet!! Smarge so deserves this W.
Don’t jinx that part, either. The bullpen still has to get six outs. 🙁
lol NO ONE SAY ANYTHING!!!
You’ve got a point. Let’s hope Will Smith pitches like Hoyt Wilhelm.
KT is the best foul-two-bunts-then-single hitter in the league
KT is great.
Oh, look. There’s Kelby with another big pinch-hit.
Bochy explaining postseason roster: “I hated leaving Tommy off, but Conor’s one of our guys.”
HA!!! HA!!! God I hate Bochy sometimes.
That’s not funny in any way
Every so often I get the impression you’re a little disenchanted these last couple of months.
I’m glad she is salty. I love it.
Not me. I’m all sunshine and unicorns. You must be confusing me with my evil twin.
Nunez is going to get it done here
Comment deleted.
Put down the bat Conor. Go sit down.
Nunez and his dirt balls.
Nunez is the anti-Belt in his approach to hitting
I’m not sold on him over Duffy yet. Let’s see how it plays out.
He’s a little bit Pablo-esque.
Without the pop!!
He has 16 HR’s
Pablo didn’t have much of that when he left.
16 HRs this year. When was the last time Pablo hit 16 in a season?
16 what?
Holy cow, Nunez is fast down the line. That wasn’t even close at first.
did he tag first base?
Greased lightning.
Nuñez is a great athlete. He could play anywhere he’s needed. (Pitch for 2017 CF.)
dumb challenge
they should call Clark safe for a frivolus challenge.
Hand used to be a starter Kuiper
There it is.
everyone’s favorite player gets it done!
The bloop of the game.
Okaaayyyyy, then. We will totally take that.
That actually will not show up as a line drive in the box score.
It IS a hit with RISP!
A couple more runs here would be nice. You hear me, Posey?
Another terrible AB from him instead
Next time, use caps lock, and throw a “Fng” in there
You left out the ‘k’ Mateo.
He didn’t hear you — you have to say it in CAPS
I see some Craws smirks in the dugout. Har-de-har.
C’mon, Pence. Talk to the Hand.
Posey is just awful.
Bochy needs to move him down in the order
I totally agree.
Thank you Pence for picking this team up
Bochy should flip flop Posey and Pence
Hunter!!!!!!!!
Awesome!!!
Get a hit, save a TV!
He has a bunch of inflatable ones.
Pence is definitely our best clutch guy. As 2012 showed, even if he hits .219 he hit ’em when they counted.
I still vividly remember that 3 run HR at home to be beat the Rockies
That was his 1st HR as a Giant, vs the Rockies closer, Posey had a SF to tie it then Pence hit a 3 run HR .
Pablo and Scutaro were not bad in that Post season, Posey had the Grand Slam, and the HR in Game 4 of World Series were Posey’s only big hits, they were big , but he hit about .200 besides those HRs .
Pablo and Scutaro were the ONLY guys who hit in the 2012 postseason. The rest of the guys were .235 or lower, and a number were under .200.
Pablo was WS MVP wasn’t he?
Yes, and Scutaro NLCS MVP.
Yes, he was, after the 3 HRs in Game 1.
My vote for best clutch hitter in the modern era relative to his batting average was Dave Kingman. Guy was a career .236 hitter and many seasons was a platoon player yet he hit 442 HR’s. Batting average can be VERY misleading.
Batting average is pretty useless if you don’t know what a guy’s OBP and SLG are
If the Giants blow this game. I’m gonna lose it.
Go to bed happy now. This is good advice.
I can’t … I took thera flu earlier today and passed out for 3 hours and now I’m up.
You talking to Bruce?
We’ll bubble wrap the tv while you slumber
You’re full of surprises tonight!!
Effin Rockies suck big time.
That 2 looks nice
So the Padres are taking out the rookies now.
Did Law forget to take 3-4 mph on the fastball on the road with him? Not sure what’s going on with his FB
Not good. Hope he’s OK.
His stuff looks terrible
He’s injured.
Agreed. They need to shut him down.
sigh.
Derek is now officially in his own funk
Like the whole team has been for 3 months?
He is hurt, velocity way down .
Then he shouldn’t pitch.
No, he shouldn’t.
Because has often been said, we have 47 other pitchers available
I know, Bochy not that bright
His arm is hurt. Needs to be shut down.
Effin bull shit.
He needs to stop with his Mini-Cueto BS
Jesus!! this team is just a powder keg.
I liked Bochy shaking his head as he steps out of the dugout to get Law. It was similar to everyone else’s reaction when he let Casilla face Lamb.
He’s got a lotta nerve.
Lol, is it possible that everyone claiming Law is injured was calling for him to be the closer as recently as 3 days ago?
Not moi, moooose.
His FB is 5 MPH down and his command is off. That’s usually not a good sign.
He threw 6 pitches. I agree he should have been taken out after the 5th.:)
Good for Bochy to pull him after one batter. He has not looked right for the last two appearances.
Since they let him Pitch, we thought he was ok, after his 1st appearance I noticed he was not OK .
And you didn’t tell anyone? WTH!!
Yup…imagine if that were any other reliever giving up a bomb.. “Strickland, you suck!!!!!”
Is Will Smith the best reliever on the team right now? Could be…
Not exactly stiff competition
Haha, definitely true. Still, he’s been pretty hot these days.
Hey Zeus Smith is a Pitcher.
Guillermo Smith.
Nunez is looking like a gold glover over there. Wow
He has a rocket arm.
The reflexes!
OMLord.
Nick Noonyez is pretty good over these
LOL. Where is Nick Noonan now?
Aw I liked that dude.
Me too. A lot better than Charlie fkn’ Culberson. That doger.
Interestingly enough, he was added to the Padres’ roster early August and was just DFA’d by them yesterday. Oops.
Bummer. I liked Joe.
Nunez is looking sweet. Nice work Fresh Prince.
Great nickname! I love it.
OH GOD.
It’s the 9th.
The Giants have a 1-run lead.
OH GOD.
Book 11
Kuiper said he looked like a center fielder – yeah, Pagan!
I do really like the Padres uniforms. Please God keep those. They look cool.
I like the mustard ones too though.
Shut up Bruce
Mac next?
Spannity, Span.
Or Brown. But a lefty?
This is a strange Year of Bochy, to say the least
My bad…Babe Span
“Righty/Lefty Span Out Clause”?
Bochy seriously needs an oil change.
So Bochy seems Span the best PH option against a LHP. Makes complete sense
Just no depth
Anyone else is a better option. Mac can K on 3 pitches too
K on 3 pitches. And nobody is surprised
Proven hitter who is just one hot streak away from reaching .200 for September.
That would have to be a helluva hot streak to get there.
He’s now platooning him against lefty starters, but with a desperately needed insurance run in scoring position, Span pinch-hits against a lefty reliever. Of course.
How many years do we Span for?
37
Boris to Mac: We hate yer guts.
Maybe when Bochy was in the hospital they did a body swap?
That was a shameful decision in the heat of a playoff race….
Got to give the big dog a bone. I guess.
He’s getting 31 million bones, even though he’s pooping on the carpet
That was just chicken-sheet.
With each passing today he’s turning into the greatest Giants CF of all time…ARow
Sheesh, Bumgarner would have been a better choice than Span there. WTF?
That move made me despise Boris. I’m serious.
Bochy really hates Mac. Even more than he hated Belt in his early years.
Romo has been excellent in 2016…except for the HRs. What could go wrong here?
No Romo has his attitude back.
Rah rah rah.
I think I would have rather seen Conor then Spawn.
THAT is how bad Span has become
Go sit down!
I hope Lopez is just getting a pen session in because he better not be going anywhere near that mound.
How can that not be a strike?
Fooled the ump.
A strike per the app.
Now it’s a bloop double. Automated strike zone can’t come soon enough
How the hell do you let him get to second on a flare?
You don’t unless it’s Pagan or Span
Chicken wing arm in LF.
Damn, now I’m getting hungry.
That was a stinking single.
Dick slide there, Schrimp
Not too fond of that dickwad so far.
Every time a third strike isn’t called, the guy gets a hit.
Once the Mets came back twice tonight, I had a pretty good idea what’s coming.
GOD THAT WAS A THIRD STRIKE DAMMIT.
This game will be tied very soon.
That could have been a balk
Who the F is this guy? Get this last out Romo
Romo! F ya!
No sweat
Maybe a little. Night all, must go herd the cat.
Buena noche!
This was Good Torture
Well, at least we won’t be swept this time!
Ball Game!
Romo’s the guy until further notice. Romo with some backup warning up.
Good job! I like how Romo throws strikes. He’s the only closer since 2007 I can stand watching.
Romo should be closing from here on out. Romo has that look like don’t eff with me.
Now let’s go out tomorrow night and score 10 + with 20 hits.
Yeah ! HA! HA!
It’s telling how stunned I feel that the Giants won that game.
It almost feels illegal at this point.
A underwhelming victory in spite of Smarge.
say what?
I’m still appreciating those 9th inning saves. No taking a single one for granted
2 consecutive saves with no blown save?? Seems so foreign.
And hats off to Smarge, he was awesome.
Night everyone!!! Big kisses.
All the way, pac. You’re welcome. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/593adcad9bedb6bd9cd70357ebac4f7c78497755f79193a48e25a74665e71afb.jpg
New Post: http://fe0.84e.myftpupload.com/postgame/jeff-samardzija-pitches-heroically-leads-giants-to-2-1-victory-against-the-padres/
That’s what’s up Romo!
Great job by Smarge, then by Romo — pretty feeble job by the hitters — so no change really, the Giants are still a long shot, but I am still oddly optimistic
Smith did well too.
That last throw by Adrianza was a dieing quail .
Yes, get some mustard on it.
Fortunately, he had a Texan over there to handle it!
Belt game him a quick snake eye after he had to pick it outta the dirt.
Really looked like he was just trying to not blow it
Samardzija is now at 197 innings for the year. Bum and Cueto are already over 210. Moore should finish between 185-190. That’s the best group of innings-eaters they’ve had since 2011.
Let’s go Giants, let’s go.
