Today was supposed to be the fourth Opening Day in TWG history. Usually we make predictions about division winners and MVP candidates, and I throw in nostalgia about previous Giants Opening Day lineups. Just for fun, here’s Greek Giant’s post from Opening Day last year and my disgusted rant after attending the opener at Petco Park.
I would be happy to have something to rant about right now. As we know all too well, there will be no new lineups, no new baseball games played today. MLB.com is streaming 30 games–one great game for each team–on various platforms all day. For the Giants, what could be more classic than Game 7 of the 2014 World Series? That will stream at 7:30 p.m. PDT.
MLB Network is also showing five “classic” Opening Day games beginning at 10 a.m. PDT, and two of them involve the Giants. But you won’t like either of them. One was the 2013 Dodger Stadium opener featuring Kershaw vs. Cain (1 p.m. PDT). The second was the 2017 opener in Arizona, which is most remembered as “Mark Melancon’s Giants debut” (ughhhh)–with some heroics by Madison Bumgarner. So Bumgarner is starting for the Giants on Opening Day this year after all!
Meanwhile, here at TWG, we’ve planned our own event. Surf Maui and I are going to log in to a Zoom meeting room at 5 p.m. PDT at watch Game 3 of the 2012 NLDS in Cincinnati, and we’re inviting everyone to join us. Here are the details.
YouTube direct link to the game
If you’ve never used Zoom before, you don’t need your own account. Just follow the link above to get to the Zoom meeting room. If it’s the first time you’ve accessed Zoom, you’ll be asked to download a software client (on a computer) or an app (on a mobile device). It’s automatic and you’ll be prompted and it just takes a couple minutes. Once you’re in the Zoom room, you might prefer the Gallery view (upper-right corner) to see faces all together. You can start or mute your own video or audio in the lower left corner.
We’ll say hi and then start the game. You can interact in the Zoom room (talk or chat/text) or add comments to this TWG thread so that people who don’t want to join the Zoom party can follow along. Even if you don’t want to watch the whole game but would like to pop in at any point and say hi for a minute, that would be great. Whatever works for you. Surf Maui and I will be there to kick things off.
So pour or light up whatever you like, and let’s be a Giants fan community on *Opening Day 2020!
